Stars and Scars traces the development of the Jewish boxing scene in London from the 1760s to more recent times. Jeff Jones examines the role that Jewish boxers played in both the progression of the sport itself and the influence they had on increasing the standing of the Jewish community in London. Starting with the first Jewish boxing stars of the bare-knuckle days, the story winds its way through the prize fighting of the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and its links to the infamous Jewish street gangs of the era. It chronicles the rise of the great London Jewish boxers at the turn of the twentieth century and the many Jewish boys’ clubs, boxing clubs and gyms that produced a huge number of fine boxers through the first half of the twentieth century. The links to the community in which they, and boxing generally, flourished, is extensively explored. This book addresses topics of mobile multi-agent systems, pattern formation, biological modelling, artificial life, unconventional computation, and robotics. The behaviour of a simple organism which is capable of remarkable biological and computational feats that seem to transcend its simple component parts is examined and modelled. In this book the following question is asked: How can something as simple as Physarum polycephalum - a giant amoeboid single-celled organism which does not possess any neural tissue, fixed skeleton or organised musculature - can approximate complex computational behaviour during its foraging, growth and adaptation of its amorphous body plan, and with such limited resources? To answer this question the same apparent limitations as faced by the organism are applied: using only simple components with local interactions. A synthesis approach is adopted and a mobile multi-agent system with very simple individual behaviours is employed. It is shown their interactions yield emergent behaviour showing complex self-organised pattern formation with material-like evolution. The presented model reproduces the biological behaviour of Physarum; the formation, growth and minimisation of transport networks. In its conclusion the book moves beyond Physarum and provides results of scoping experiments approximating other complex systems using the multi-agent approach. The results of this book demonstrate the power and range of harnessing emergent phenomena arising in simple multi-agent systems for biological modelling, computation and soft-robotics applications. It methodically describes the necessary components and their interactions, showing how deceptively simple components can create powerful mechanisms, aided by abundant illustrations, supplementary recordings and interactive models. It will be of interest to those in biological sciences, physics, computer science and robotics who wish to understand how simple components can result in complex and useful behaviours and who wish explore the potential of guided pattern formation themselves.

I remember looking up the definition one day of "SNAFU". I had no idea it was an acrostic. As stated, "situation normal all fouled up" This is a global movement of epidemic crisis. Normal is broken Is it too outrageous a thought, that because I have a passion for the truth (what I like to call "the real"), a sincere appetite for accountability, that a word spoken at the right time, in the right place, could set off a wave of reaction that would actually make humanity think? That there exists truth in such a transferable form that we could make conscious choices that defines out of the grey a black and white clarity that brings resolve and not more cover up. Why is it that although we have had partisan regime changes that the issues do not get resolved they just keep reshuffling the same deck? Accusations get made, and no follow through gets performed. I enjoy intelligent communication and a good talk show host, but why is it always the same story? Rouse up listeners on a particular issue, get them down right angry, proving or suggesting content, that then goes only as far as the ratings. This is political "mambo-jumbo" Working up the writhe of a good fire dance, but then send everyone home after the show with just a few snapshots for the fridge, has become par I was thinking I am not the only one frustrated with the word, "CHANGE", but be clueless on its current definition? Normal is broken in the worse way, from education to ethics, benefits to business, and consciousness to creativity. The ABC's are becoming an ancient nursery rhyme and Ritalin, Vicodin, and Wellbutrin nursery room dispensaries, Wake up World There is a greater truth here revealing itself. Who declares the testing, standardization, and expectations of 28 students in a classroom from southern California is "NORMAL"? We hear screaming for individual rights while individuality is squelched How about business, banking, and insurance? How about the NSA, IRS, FDA, AMA, & FEMA? Is there more purpose behind the G8, UN, and TLC? What about veterans that cannot find gainful employment or benefits that have value, or psychological detoxification of combat and culture? Do we really want to talk about the lottery, fuel prices, stock exchange, healthcare and retirement plans? I am telling you normal is broken, this coalition and collection of words is a start on getting it fixed
