This collection traces the period from 2019, and the catastrophe fires in Australia, through the COVID years and beyond, feeling its way into how we live in the world, and how we might reflect on the value of listening to the many voices that make up our everyday experience. Written primarily in prose poetry, it attempts to expand the capacity of the sentence, rather than the line, to gesture toward what is rarely said (or cannot be said), and to offer fragments of stories about finding a home in the world as it is, and as we are.

This latest project of 'authorised theft' amongst poetic friends sees them raiding the 19th century for inspiration-across a variety of artforms. But C19 here is not just a past century; it is also the terrible present moment in which we live, and in which this remarkable collaborative work has been written.

These poems emerged slowly, and through aleatory conversations between Sh and Jen, in which they identified points of connection in and beyond poetry. Both poets are interested in experiment, and in women poets' voices; both have lived in Western Australia and been captivated by the light, the space, and the vastness of that state; and both poets have spent a fair bit of time in mourning and in responding to the loss of loved one. They are also interested in movement in creative and scholarly terms. For Sh , the elemental world is a motivating force; for Jen, it's travel-hence the title of this joint publication.

'Even the memories of memory are fading. It has been decades since this all began.'In Jen Webb's hands, the prose poem is a fluid medium, alive with sharp glints and subtle eddies, and never uncontrolled... though it is a deceptive calm, nudged just beneath the surface by the force of the unsaid. -- Philip Gross

Contemporary Asian art has had a remarkable impact on global art practice, in addition to serving as a record of the region’s history from decolonisation to the present. Many Asian artists are deeply concerned about what it means to be human and to contribute to the development of a sustainable society, as well as having a sustained commitment to making art. This book, written at the start of the ‘Asian century’, focuses on the contexts and conditions which have helped to shape both art practice and postcolonial society in the region. One of the first surveys of contemporary Asian art, it uses case studies of key artists to discuss the work in relation to issues of human rights, social and environmental well-being and creativity. As such, it makes an important contribution to studies of contemporary Asian art and art history.

Bourdieu's work is formidable-the journey is tough. Follow this French foreign legion-take an apple, take a hanky-but take this book.Peter Beilharz , Professor of Sociology , La Trobe UniversityPierre Bourdieu's work on the sociology of culture and language, on practical reason, on education, on citizenship and the cultures of poverty, and on a range of other topics is now coming to be seen as one of the 20th century's most important contributions to our thinking about the world. Understanding Bourdieu is a comprehensive and lucid introduction to his work. Measured and judicious, it's the best road map of this significant body of work currently available.John Frow, Regius Professor of Rhetoric and English Literature, University of EdinburghYou name it, Pierre Bourdieu has written about it. Now considered one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century, he has left his mark on most of the 'big' theoretical issues in the world of contemporary theory: gender, subjectivity, the body, culture, citizenship, and globalisation. His terms are now commonplace: 'social capital', 'cultural capital', 'field', and 'habitus'.Bourdieu examines how people conduct their lives in relation to one another and to major social institutions. He argues that culture and education aren't simply minor influences, but as important as economics in determining differences between groups of people. Unlike the other grand systematisers Marx and Foucault, Bourdieu has tested these arguments in detailed fieldwork. His range is eclectic, his vision is vast, and his writing is often dense and challenging.Understanding Bourdieu offers a comprehensive introduction to Bourdieu's work. It is essential reading for anyone tackling him for the first time.
