Wie konnte es einem kleinen mitteleurop ischen Land wie der DDR gelingen, sich im Wintersport an die Weltspitze zu bringen, obwohl es allein aus geographischer und meteorologischer Sicht nur bescheidene Voraussetzungen f r den Wintersport bieten konnte? Mit welchen leistungssportlichen Strategien und Methoden erreichte die DDR diese Welterfolge und wie konnten sie diese Erfolge lange Zeit halten? Die vorliegende Arbeit setzt sich mit der Problematik auseinander, wie es der DDR gelang, durch eine effiziente Leistungssportf rderung auch im Wintersportbereich Weltspitzenleistungen zu erbringen. Dazu erfolgt eine genaue Analyse des umfangreichen Systems der DDR-Leistungssportf rderung anhand ausgew hlter Wintersportarten von 1968 bis 1989. Zudem wird dem Hochleistungstraining unter Ber cksichtigung der als "Vertrauliche Dienstsachen" eingestuften Publikationen der ehemaligen DHfK Leipzig sowie eigener Zeitzeugenbefragungen ein hoher Stellenwert einger umt. Auf die Dopingproblematik wird ebenfalls eingegangen.

Social network analysis is used widely in the social sciences to study interactions among people, groups, and organizations, yet until now there has been no book that shows behavioral biologists how to apply it to their work on animal populations. Exploring Animal Social Networks provides a practical guide for researchers, undergraduates, and graduate students in ecology, evolutionary biology, animal behavior, and zoology. Existing methods for studying animal social structure focus either on one animal and its interactions or on the average properties of a whole population. This book enables researchers to probe animal social structure at all levels, from the individual to the population. No prior knowledge of network theory is assumed. The authors give a step-by-step introduction to the different procedures and offer ideas for designing studies, collecting data, and interpreting results.
