"Bixby is the author of the most horrifying modern fantasy I have ever read." said the distinguished critic Kingsley Amis The fantasies in this collection were written in the late 1950s & early '60s. There are plenty of laughs in this collection, but each carries a wicked O'Henry type sting in its scathing observations of the typical sexual relationships of the time. Each is a humorous and razor-edged satire on mid-century American sexual mores and morals. And though much has changed in the half-century since, Bixby's fantasies still retain an embarrassing relevance to elements in heterosexual relationships today.Fans of Jerome Bixby's film classics, like Fantastic Voyage and The Man from Earth, and his stories for the original Star Trek television series, "Mirror, Mirror", "Day of the Dove", "By Any Other Name," and "Requiem for Methuselah", will find much of the same penchant for biting commentary on human foibles and failures in these Devilish Tales.
This collection of literature attempts to compile many of the classic works that have stood the test of time and offer them at a reduced, affordable price, in an attractive volume so that everyone can enjoy them.
"...Breathtaking skill ... interesting dialogue, a carefully constructed story, and an appealing message. Bixby should be better known." -Gary Westfahl Jerome Bixby (1923-1998) was a highly regarded professional science fiction magazine editor and writer remembered for his "yeoman work in raising the standards of the science fiction action story, whose own stories, though few, are much sought after by discriminating readers." (Science Fiction Stories, 1953). Mirror, Mirror, the first collection of Jerome Bixby's science fiction in nearly fifty years, showcases the best work from this motion picture and television writer's journeyman years as a pulp magazine writer. It features four stories made immortal by their adaptation for Star Trek and The Twilight Zone. Elements from two of these stories, "One-Way Street" and "Mirror, Mirror," were woven into Bixby's Hugo Award winning Star Trek episode, which gave birth to the evil mirror universe populated by sinister facsimiles of Kirk, Spock, the crew of the Enterprise, and the entire Federation. Another, "Cargo to Calisto", became the basis for the Star Trek episode "By Any Other Name". Meanwhile, "It's a Good Life" won immortality as an episode of the The Twilight Zone. Plus eleven more irresistible science fictional masterpieces from the pen of Jerome Bixby. Mirror, Mirror was edited, and is personally introduced, by his son, screenwriter and producer Emerson Bixby. "Good entertainment." -Analog

Allenby, in command of the Mars I, was first to set foot outside the ship. He took his "one small step for man" -- and found himself staring at the rock in front of him. It was about five feet high. Ordinary granite -- no special shape -- and several inches below its summit, running straight through it in a northeasterly direction, was a neatly round four-inch hole.He made a pun and grunted."Well, I'll be," said Janus, our photographer. "A hole.""In a rock," added Gonzales, our botanist."Round," said Randolph, our biologist."An artifact," finished Allenby softly. Before we were done we'd found similar holes all over the surface of the planet.

Armchair Fiction features the best in classic science fiction short story collections, complete with original illustrations. "Masters of Science Fiction, Vol. Two" features the works of Jerome Bixby, who was one of the best known sci-fi authors of the twentieth century. Not just an exceptional short story writer, Jerome Bixby was also editor of the pulp magazine favorite, "Planet Stories," from 1950 to 1951. In the 1960's he added screenwriting to his list of achievements. "It's a Good Life" was used in the original "Twilight Zone" series. He also wrote four "Star Trek" episodes and it was his distinct imagination that initiated the "mirror universe" concept. This eclectic collection is a wonderful example of Bixby's wide range creativity.
