Nonlinear Dynamics of Time Delay Systems

Nonlinear Dynamics of Time Delay Systems

Jian Xu

SPRINGER VERLAG, SINGAPORE

This book presents research advancements in the dynamics of systems with time delay conducted by the group led by Professor Jian Xu. Addressing the challenges arising from the joint impact of time delay and nonlinearity, novel theoretical approaches are developed to formulate the nonlinear response of the system. This facilitates the classification of complex nonlinear dynamics, especially the non-resonant and resonant double Hopf bifurcation. In contrast to systems without time delay, time delay systems require specific considerations when identifying system parameters, particularly the time delay. Consequently, inverse problems of systems with time delay are also explored in this book. Moreover, detailed investigations on vibration suppression methods and experimental prototypes based on time delay, such as time delay isolators with quasi-zero stiffness, are conducted. Simultaneously, this book is enriched with a large number of case studies ranging from manufacturing, network science, biology, and public transportation, illuminating the mechanisms of delay-induced nonlinear dynamics in practical applications. This book is suitable for graduate students and researchers who are eager to understand the delay-induced nonlinear dynamics, or technical personnel in whose projects small variations of time delay may cause significant changes in system responses.

This book presents the research results of advanced vibration control technology, based on two types of typical equipment in industrial engineering of China: power equipment and vibration-sensitive equipment. The main contents of this book include optimized active control strategy research, semi-active control research that can track and equivalently achieve active control effects, refined analysis of active control based on finite element method, research on the impact of vibration isolator layout on vibration isolation performance, passive and active control research based on system freedom decoupling and load decoupling, realized passive and active control research using quasi-zero stiffness system based on positive and negative stiffness, intelligent sensors optimization deployment of plane and space structure, and related key technology application cases in engineering applications. This book provides useful references for engineers and researchers in industrial engineering and technical support for practitioners in the development of China's high-end industry.

Deleuze and Chinese “Pure Literature”: Literary Worlding from History to Becoming probes into the potentialities of a new conception of literature obscured by the critical ambivalence in China’s literary field around the turn of the century. With the help of Gilles Deleuze’s philosophy, this book articulates many of the latent social, political, and cultural ideas embedded in “pure literature” subsisting as a literary sensibility waiting to be expressed. The specific practices and works of “pure literature” analyzed in the book also serve as instances of what Deleuze’s creative concepts can address, testing and fleshing out their efficacy. Identifying shared problem-solving areas between Deleuze’s philosophy and Chinese “pure literature,” Jian Xu uses them to shed light on the hidden edges of Chinese “pure literature.” Through such Deleuzian theses as the immanence of becoming, the need of the nonhistorical, the virtual real and pure event, the ills of representationalism, becoming-minoritarian, becoming-woman, becoming-imperceptible, pre-individual singularities, and so forth, the book sets about creating a new critical vocabulary to help “pure literature” become self-conscious of its own political creative potentials.

Media Events in Web 2.0 China

This book is among the first to use a "media events" framework to examine China's Internet activism and politics, and the first study of the transformation of China's media events through the parameter of online activism. The author locates the practices of major modes of online activism in China (shanzhai [culture jamming]; citizen journalism; and weiguan [mediated mobilisation]) into different types of Chinese media events (ritual celebration, natural disaster, political scandal). The contextualised analysis of online activism thus enables exploration of the spatial, temporal and relational dimensions of Chinese online activism with other social agents -- such as the Party-state, mainstream media and civil society. Analysis reveals Internet politics in China on three interrelated levels: the individual, the discursive and the institutional. Contemporary cases, rich in empirical research data and interdisciplinary theory, demonstrate that the alternative and activist use of the Internet has intervened into and transformed conventional Chinese media events in various types of agents, their agendas and performances, and the subsequent and corresponding political impact. The Party-market controlled Chinese media events have become more open, contentious and deliberative in the Web 2.0 era due to the active participation of ordinary Chinese people aided by the Internet.
