2018 Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Award Finalists -Religion Evangelicalism in America has cracked, split on the shoals of the 2016 presidential election and its aftermath, leaving many wondering if they want to be in or out of the evangelical tribe. The contentiousness brought to the fore surrounds what it means to affirm and demonstrate evangelical Christian faith amidst the messy and polarized realities gripping our country and world. Who or what is defining the evangelical social and political vision? Is it the gospel or is it culture? For a movement that has been about the primacy of Christian faith, this is a crisis. This collection of essays was gathered by Mark Labberton, president of Fuller Theological Seminary, who provides an introduction to the volume. What follows is a diverse and provocative set of perspectives and reflections from evangelical insiders who wrestle with their responses to the question of what it means to be evangelical in light of their convictions. Contributors include: Shane Claiborne, Red Letter ChristiansJim Daly, Focus on the FamilyMark Galli, Christianity TodayLisa Sharon Harper, FreedomRoad.usTom Lin, InterVarsity Christian FellowshipKaren Swallow Prior, Liberty UniversitySoong-Chan Rah, North Park UniversityRobert Chao Romero, UCLASandra Maria Van Opstal, Grace and Peace CommunityAllen Yeh, Biola UniversityMark Young, Denver Seminary Referring to oneself as evangelical cannot be merely a congratulatory self-description. It must instead be a commitment and aspiration guided by the grace and mercy of Jesus Christ. What now are Christ's followers called to do in response to this identity crisis?

A stage animal, Jim Daly has been throwing on the greasepaint and wiping it off over seven decades in the dog-eat-dog world of Australian performance. With significant credits across both theatre and screen forms, from the daring plays of Jack Hibberd and Barry Dickins to the celebration of the Brecht centenary year (1998), appearing in both the acclaimed The Caucasian Chalk Circle at Belvoir and in Arturo Ui at the Melbourne Theatre Company, he has ploughed on into the Twenty-First Century with seven seasons of the Aboriginal play Coranderrk, the ground-breaking headphone verbatim theatre of Roslyn Oades' Hello, Goodbye, and Happy Birthday, and a raft of independent works in 'dirty spaces', including his own performance-research work on the Katyń massacre. In between, in the scenes seen in this memoir, is the need to survive and support a family, a necessity spinning him through rocky teaching and hospitality scenes, and picking up a PhD for good measure. This is not a warm story of luck. In a country where performers need a lot of it, his story here brings alive the spiky Australian performing world from the working-actor's point of view. This memoir is a personal career history coloured with dollops of the recent history of Australian performance, theatre especially.Daly is an awarded, chameleonic Australian stage, film and television actor and scholar, known for Pirate Islands, the legendary 100 Metres Track episode with John Clark, and many high-energy solo productions. From the pioneering days of Australian live to air television in the 1950s, through teaching, including a foray into a religious teaching Congregation, and to the mainstages of capital and provincial cities, and through the rocky, uncertain terrain of so-called independent theatre, his career spans over 70 years. Where most fall by the wayside, he has survived.

"On the way living" is a learned skill, not an innate ability. Suddenly the homeless person, the prisoner, the addict, the person who argues with you in the grocery store, the disagreeable boss, the customer becomes an opportunity with a chance to intervene and offer life-changing hope, even when they were not your intended destination. When we put into practice "on the way living," we begin to see people differently--not as a threat or inconvenience, but as a mission field with opportunities to allow God to use us to change minds and hearts so they can experience life and peace. Slow down, open your eyes and ears to see and hear those moments that God places along your path. Read the amazing stories of persons who have witnessed modern-day miracles that happened to themselves and others when they allowed the Holy Spirit to guide them while they were on their way.

Written by Jim Daly, the compassionate leader of Focus on the Family, ReFocus inspires and motivates Christians to transcend political agendas and partisan battles and instead interact with others in a way that will consistently reveal the heart of God to a desperately hurting world. Our culture has become painfully polarized, often hindering relationships with neighbors, colleagues, and the very people who need to discover the love of Jesus Christ. Remembering that we are foremost citizens of heaven serving a loving Father, we who call ourselves followers of Christ can once again be known by our love. But how? In what context and through what means? How can we tear down the walls that divide our culture, our neighborhoods and workplaces and families, in this increasingly contentious world?Drawing on a rich variety of true stories and sources both historical and contemporary--from behind the scenes in today's halls of power, to moving accounts from church history, to powerful breakthroughs in Daly's own life and ministry--Daly challenges us to reclaim our responsibility, and our privilege, as God's sons and daughters. As followers of Jesus with His humility and compassion as our model, ReFocus: Living a Life that Reflects God's Heart demonstrates how Christians can show the world an inexplicable taste of grace with no agenda other than to reveal the heart of God as the loving Abba Father He is.

When Parenting Isn't Perfect
Perfection is the enemy of parenting. Jim Daly sees and hears from mothers and fathers trying hard to pursue perfection. They listen to the best experts and read all the right books. When someone gives them a “World’s Best Mom” or “No. 1 Dad” coffee mug, they want it to be true. And they want their children to pursue perfection, too. It’s admirable for parents to be the very best moms and dads they can be for their children. But sometimes in so doing, they leave grace behind—both for themselves and their children. Jim believes that our quest for perfection, a quest that he believes is particularly strong among Christians, runs counter to God’s own boundless gift of grace. We can become Pharisaical parents, quoting endless rules and holding everyone to impossible standards. But God doesn’t want us, and our kids don’t need us, to be perfect. As parents, we’re called to simply do our best. And when we fail—which we will—we’re called to try again tomorrow.Though he’s the President of Focus on the Family, Jim does not promise that his book will be a catalyst for a perfect family. But it can help point the way toward a good family—one that feels safe and warm; one filled with love and laughter. This book will encourage mothers and fathers to embrace the messiness of parenthood and show grace to their own less-than-ideal children. Jim, through his own experiences, expertise, and array of stories, will lead both moms and dads to a better understanding of what being a good family is all about.
