Austrian conductor Hans Rosbaud was a leading figure in European musical life from the late 1920s until his death in 1962. Internationally respected as a conductor of Mozart and Haydn, Bruckner and Mahler, his posthumous reputation rests primarily on his standard-setting performances of modern music. In this complete research tool, musicologist Joan Evans brings together all the materials vital for a full assessment of his career. The eminent composer and conductor Pierre Boulez presents his personal recollections of Rosbaud in a foreword. Because Rosbaud's primary sphere of activity was radio, he made relatively few commercial recordings, but his broadcast recordings number in the hundreds. Evans carefully documents all commercial and private recordings, also providing a biography of the conductor, a section of first performances and an annotated bibliography comprising books, articles, record and concert reviews, radio interviews, and documentary broadcasts. A career chronology appears as an appendix, and a description of his musical compositions and other papers, as well as a list of the works he conducted at the annual Donaueschingen Festival, comprise further appendixes. All sections are fully cross referenced and indexed, thereby providing ready access to this wealth of data.
Magical Jewels Of The Middle Ages And The Renaissance Particularly In England
Magical Jewels of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance Particularly in England by Joan Evans is a comprehensive exploration of the use of precious stones and jewels in magical practices during the Middle Ages and Renaissance periods, with a particular focus on England. The author delves into the symbolism and significance of various gemstones, such as rubies, sapphires, and emeralds, and how they were believed to possess mystical powers that could be harnessed for protection, healing, and divination. Evans also examines the role of jewelry in religious and royal ceremonies, as well as its use in amulets, talismans, and other magical objects. Drawing on historical accounts, literature, and art, the book provides a fascinating glimpse into the beliefs and practices of people in the past and their relationship with the natural world. This Is A New Release Of The Original 1922 Edition. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Monastic Architecture in France

Monastic Architecture in France

France is a country so rich in architecture that it is not surprising that some of its fine buildings receive little attention. Amongst the Romanesque and Gothic churches and the Renaissance châteaux, the domestic architecture of the monasteries has been overlooked. Originally published in 1964, this book was the first study of French domestic monastic architecture since the Renaissance. The architecture corresponds to the collegiate and academic architecture of England, but its style is more splendid. To gain material for this book Dr Evans travelled all over France, and found that many of the buildings were now farms or country houses. The book includes 822 photographs, and the study is divided according to the various orders. This is a book which will appeal to art-lovers as well as architects and historians of the religious orders.
