An exploration of a crucial turning point in Italian art, the early 1300s in the city of Siena “This is a book to be savored and treasured, much like the objects it celebrates.”—Ann Landi, Wall Street Journal In the early 1300s, the city of Siena gave rise to an extraordinary period of creativity and innovation. Painters, sculptors, and goldsmiths produced remarkable works whose impact was felt far beyond the city’s walls. From vast altarpieces to portable objects for private devotion, the art emanating from Siena left an enduring legacy. This book explores a crucial turning point in Italian art when the prestige of painting reached new heights. Siena became the centre of a rich exchange of ideas, as painters took inspiration from marble and ivory sculptures, intricate metalwork, and precious imported silks to enhance the power of their work. Travelling beyond their native city, Sienese artists made their mark across Italy and into northern Europe. Beautifully illustrated and featuring important new scholarship, chapters explore masterpieces by four of Siena’s most illustrious painters—Duccio, Simone Martini, and Ambrogio and Pietro Lorenzetti—alongside objects in other media and from other countries and cultures, encouraging fresh perspectives and dialogues between these groundbreaking works. "A darkly funny tale with a gloriously sinister twist." --The Observer (London) The bestselling author of The Trouble with Goats and Sheep delivers a "compellingly creepy" (The Guardian, UK) novel filled with unexpected twists about mysterious murders in a quiet neighborhood. Linda has lived in a quiet neighborhood since fleeing the dark events of her childhood in Wales. Now she sits in her kitchen, wondering if this is all there is: pushing the vacuum around and cooking fish sticks for dinner, a far cry from the glamorous lifestyle she sees in the glossy magazines coming through the mail slot addressed to the previous occupant, Rebecca Finch. Linda's husband Terry isn't perfect--he picks his teeth, tracks dirt through the house, and spends most of his time in front of the TV. But that seems fairly normal--until he starts keeping odd hours at work, at around the same time young women start to go missing. If only Linda could track down and befriend Rebecca, maybe some of that enviable lifestyle would rub off on her and she wouldn't have to worry about what Terry is up to. But in this "sublimely structured and darkly witty" (Publishers Weekly, starred review) tale, the grass isn't always greener and you can't change who you really are. And some secrets can't stay buried forever...
'One of the most beautiful books you will ever read' Kate Mosse In this powerful memoir, Joanna Cannon tells her story as a junior doctor in visceral, heart-rending snapshots. We walk with her through the wards, facing extraordinary and daunting moments: from attending her first post-mortem, sitting with a patient through their final moments, to learning the power of a well- or badly chosen word. These moments, and the small sustaining acts of kindness and connection that punctuate hospital life, teach her that emotional care and mental health can be just as critical as restoring a heartbeat. In a profession where weakness remains a taboo, this moving, beautifully written book brings to life the vivid, human stories of doctors and patients - and shows us why we need to take better care of those who care for us.
The bestselling author of The Trouble with Goats and Sheep delivers a suspenseful and emotionally satisfying novel "infused with warmth and humor" (People) about a lifelong friendship, a devastating secret, and the small acts of kindness that bring people together. There are three things you should know about Elsie. The first thing is that she's my best friend. The second is that she always knows what to say to make me feel better. And the third thing...might take a bit more explaining. Eighty-four-year-old Florence has fallen in her flat at Cherry Tree Home for the Elderly. As she waits to be rescued, she thinks about her friend Elsie and wonders if a terrible secret from their past is about to come to light. If the charming new resident is who he claims to be, why does he look exactly like a man who died sixty years ago? From the acclaimed, bestselling author of The Trouble with Goats and Sheep, Three Things About Elsie "breathes with suspense, providing along the way piercing, poetic descriptions, countless tiny mysteries, and breathtaking little reveals...a rich portrait of old age and friendship stretched over a fascinating frame" (Kirkus Reviews, starred review). This is an "amusing and heartbreaking" (Publishers Weekly) story about forever friends on the twisting path of life who come to understand how the fine threads of humanity connect us all.

Case Studies in Deaf Education provides comprehensive materials that will prepare prospective teachers to work with the diverse spectrum of students who are d/Deaf and hard of hearing (d/Dhh) and empower them to better understand these complex and unique learners. The text presents an extensive series of case studies that are balanced and unbiased in both language and instructional approaches and that encourage readers to use background details, academic data, and evidence-based practices to make informed educational decisions. The authors address the diversity of d/Dhh students by examining a multitude of learner characteristics that influence communication and educational services. These characteristics and their interactions include a student's background experiences, language and communication mode (sign and/or listening and spoken language), language and academic proficiency levels, use of assistive hearing devices (hearing aids or cochlear implants), and family dynamics. The case studies are supported with authentic supplemental materials, such as audiograms and Individualized Educational Plans, and are accompanied by discussion questions, activities, resource lists, and a glossary of essential terms. Case Studies in Deaf Education will help teachers and allied professionals develop the knowledge and skills to use a collaborative, problem-solving process that leads to the provision of quality, effective services for students who are d/Dhh. An electronic instructor's manual accompanies this text and will be available upon publication.

"I loved this book. It's one of those books that you just want to give to everybody." --Nancy Pearl on NPR's Morning Edition "An astute, engaging debut" (Publishers Weekly), The Trouble with Goats and Sheep is a quirky and utterly charming tale of a community in need of reconciliation and two girls learning what it means to belong.England, 1976. Mrs. Creasy is missing and the Avenue is alive with whispers. The neighbors blame her sudden disappearance on the heat wave, but ten-year-olds Grace and Tilly aren't convinced, and decide to take matters into their own hands. Spunky, spirited Grace and quiet, thoughtful Tilly go door to door in search of clues. The cul-de-sac starts to give up its secrets, and the amateur detectives uncover more than they ever imagined. A complicated history of deception begins to emerge--everyone on the Avenue has something to hide. During that sweltering summer, the lives of all the neighbors begin to unravel. The girls come to realize that the lies told to conceal what happened one fateful day about a decade ago are the same ones Mrs. Creasy was starting to peel back just before she disappeared... "A thoughtful tale of loyalty and friendship, family dynamics and human nature" (Kirkus Reviews), this glorious debut is part coming-of-age story, part mystery. The Trouble with Goats and Sheep radiates an unmistakable warmth and intelligence and is "rife with tiny extraordinaries" (The New York Times Book Review). "Joanna Cannon is an author to watch" (Booklist, starred review).
