The major writings, teachings, and thoughts of Elder John A. Widtsoe have been readily available to Latter-day Saints for more than half a century now. What has not been readily available, however, is an overview, compilation, or compendium of those writings, teachings, and thoughts in a topical guide with A to Z format. As a result, to fully grasp any one teaching of Elder Widtsoe required reading through all of his numerous writings to capture the highly nuanced insights and clarifications that were often a pervasive part of his own scientific and theological methodology. Out of sheer frustration with this laborious process, compiler David Martin Call began a ten-year labor of love bringing together the material that has evolved into this doctrinal compendium, which features the most salient teachings of Elder Widtsoe-a master teacher, a scientist, and an apostle in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
A rational theology is a theology based on fundamental principles that harmonize with knowledge and reason. It derives its laws, ordinances, and authority from accepted fundamental principles, and it finds expression and use in everyday life. In short, a rational theology is derived from the invariable laws of the universe and exists for the good of humanity. The author writes, "The principles of the Gospel, as held by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, are stated, briefly, simply and without comment, to show the coherence, reasonableness and universality of the gospel philosophy. . . . Those who are led to study this rational theology in the light of the best knowledge and soundest thought, will enter a fertile field, and will find a surprising harmony between the Gospel and all discovered truth."John Andreas Widtsoe was born in Dal e, Norway in 1872, emigrating to Utah in 1883. He graduated from Brigham Young College in 1891, and from Harvard (with high honors) in 1894. In 1899 he was awarded a Ph.D. with high honors from the University of G ttingen, Germany. He served as president of Utah State Agricultural College and the University of Utah. He was a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1921 until his death in 1952.
Joseph Smith as Scientist-A Contribution to Mormon Philosophy is a classic religios biography by John A. Widtsoe. In the life of every person, who receives a higher education, in or out of schools, there is a time when there seems to be opposition between science and religion; between man-made and God-made knowledge. The struggle for reconciliation between the contending forces is not an easy one. It cuts deep into the soul and usually leaves scars that ache while life endures. There are thousands of young people in the Church to-day, and hundreds of thousands throughout the world, who are struggling to set themselves right with the God above and the world about them. It is for these young people, primarily, that the following Joseph Smith biography has been written.
