The latest issue of this regular publication for studying contemporary film considers the resurgent genre of science fiction cinema. Essays include the star persona of Tom Cruise in relation to his many science fiction projects (such as "War of the Worlds" [2005] and, most recently, "Edge of Tomorrow" [2014]) and the theme of the double in science fiction cinema, using "Moon" (2009) and "AI: Artificial Intelligence "(2001) as the most prominent examples while also drawing on older works.

Fundamentals of Ground Engineering is an unconventional study guide that serves up the key principles, theories, definitions, and analyses of geotechnical engineering in bite-sized pieces. This book contains brief—one or two pages per topic—snippets of information covering the geotechnical engineering component of a typical undergraduate course in civil engineering as well as some topics for advanced courses. Written in note form, it summarizes the basic principles and theories of soil mechanics, the procedures for creating a geotechnical model, and the common analyses for slopes, foundations, and walls.Puts the mechanics into soil mechanicsPresents information that is simple to use—structured around diagrams and formulae with few wordsExplains detailed analyses given in the longer standard textsA short, easily read summary of the basic theories and routine analyses of ground engineering, Fundamentals of Ground Engineering incorporates plenty of diagrams and concentrated data without going into detailed explanations. This text is an ideal reference for students, practicing civil engineers—senior and junior—and by engineering geologists.
Gift or a Given? – A Theology of Healing for the 21st Century
Most books on the topic of spiritual healing focus on practical aspects of services and liturgies and on testimonies of miraculous cures. Starting from an acceptance of the reality of healing in personal experience the author attempts to unpack the theological implications of what he has seen and done. He comes to the conclusion that the usual focus of the church on healing as a charismatic gift from an interventionist God is a distraction from the presence of healing throughout the natural world and human life. He sees healing as a perspective which can also be extended to inter-faith dialogue and the world of politics and the environment. Finally he provides a practical example of how such a perspective can be applied in the life of the worshipping community
The Mechanics of Soils and Foundations
Ideal for undergraduates of geotechnical engineering for civil engineers, this established textbook sets out the basic theories of soil mechanics in a clear and straightforward way; combining both classical and critical state theories and giving students a good grounding in the subject which will last right through into a career as a geotechnical engineer. The subject is broken down into discrete topics which are presented in a series of short, focused chapters with clear and accessible text that develops from the purely theoretical to discussing practical applications. Soil behaviour is described by relatively simple equations with clear parameters while a number of worked examples and simple experimental demonstrations are included to illustrate the principles involved and aid reader understanding.

The Oscars

Born as an exercise in studio self-promotion, over the last 70 years the Academy Awards have been responsible for more crimes against art, fashion, taste and talent than the complete oeuvre of Cher (herself an Awards-night favourite). Great actors and directors have been consistently, almost methodically, overlooked by the Academy in favour of journeymen or novelty acts. Entire careers have passed without reward while shockingly mediocre pictures have been over-garlanded with honours. So why do the Oscars matter so much? This completely unauthorised Pocket Essential guide to the Oscars explains how the Awards can help us to understand the history of Hollywood. In a decade-by-decade account, it details how the Academy mirrored, endorsed or rejected industry trends, be they technical (The Jazz Singer's exclusion from competition at the first awards in 1927/8), artistic (the long-standing favour extended to period dramas), or political (the Academy's capitulation in the face of McCarthyism). The book also includes a full list of Oscar winners in every category, as well as the author's own nominations for Worst Oscar-nominated Films and Shocking Oscar Oversights, making it the best-value, most up-to-date guide available to this annual public celebration of money, envy, spite and the movies.

Research in Nursing Series The main objectives of this study were to present profiles of a hostel in Glasgow and a comparative hostel, to make assessments and referrals and to evaluate their effect. These objectives were successfully met along with secondary objectives to discover insights into the residents' experiences and lifestyles, and their interaction with health and nursing services. The objectives were addressed by gathering and analysing quantitative and qualitative data and the use of theoretical perspectives: Roy's nursing theory of adaptation (to study the men as individuals) and a sociological perspective, including Deviance Theory, to examine the men as a group. Although the study concentrated on District Nursing practise, it demonstrates universal methods of nursing practise relevant to all community nurses.
Strategic Marketing

Strategic Marketing

This book is designed to help both students and the general reader gain a practical understanding of the strategic marketing process, and how it can be applied to a variety of real-life organisational and national environments. As a case book it encourages readers to develop a 'strategic mindset' towards the development of marketing programmes. The cases are based upon primary information and many are complemented by financial data, thus allowing readers to become 'insiders' rather than observers. Cases are supported by sections on relevant theory and specific learning notes. Part one introduces and reviews relevant strategic marketing concepts and practices. Introductory chapters explore the strategy/marketing interface, the conventional strategic marketing process and some contemporary challenges to established practices. Part two gives readers the chance to apply strategic marketing principles to a variety of situations, and information is introduced to emphasise the urgency of the situation, whilst the reality of the fiancial data serves to constrain the submission of unrealistic marketing programmes. Strategic Marketing: Cases, Concepts and Challenges is essential reading for students and practitioners who wish to bridge strategic marketing theory and practice in the wider organisational context. The text is suitable for students of marketing and strategy at undergraduate, professional and masters levels.
