Advanced Topics in Linear Algebra

Advanced Topics in Linear Algebra presents, in an engaging style, novel topics linked through the Weyr matrix canonical form, a largely unknown cousin of the Jordan canonical form discovered by Eduard Weyr in 1885. The book also develops much linear algebra unconnected to canonical forms, that has not previously appeared in book form. It presents common applications of Weyr form, including matrix commutativity problems, approximate simultaneous diagonalization, and algebraic geometry, with the latter two having topical connections to phylogenetic invariants in biomathematics and multivariate interpolation. The Weyr form clearly outperforms the Jordan form in many situations, particularly where two or more commuting matrices are involved, due to the block upper triangular form a Weyr matrix forces on any commuting matrix. In this book, the authors develop the Weyr form from scratch, and include an algorithm for computing it. The Weyr form is also derived ring-theoretically in an entirely different way to the classical derivation of the Jordan form. A fascinating duality exists between the two forms that allows one to flip back and forth and exploit the combined powers of each. The book weaves together ideas from various mathematical disciplines, demonstrating dramatically the variety and unity of mathematics. Though the book's main focus is linear algebra, it also draws upon ideas from commutative and noncommutative ring theory, module theory, field theory, topology, and algebraic geometry. Advanced Topics in Linear Algebra offers self-contained accounts of the non-trivial results used from outside linear algebra, and lots of worked examples, thereby making it accessible to graduate students. Indeed, the scope of the book makes it an appealing graduate text, either as a reference or for an appropriately designed one or two semester course. A number of the authors' previously unpublished results appear as well.

Discover which prehistoric mammals would once have lived by the River Thames. Take a detailed look at the crystal palace of the Great Exhibition and an early map of the underground. See the locations of medieval plague pits, Tudor inns, eighteenth-century hangings and gangland crime hotspots. London: An Illustrated History offers a new perspective on one of the world's most exciting cities, from Iron Age cemeteries to Victorian sewers, Viking raids to Zeppelin air raids, Roman temples to Jewish ghettos, Georgian brothels to the Great Fire, Roman arenas to the Olympics. Images, objects and expert text from the Museum of London, together with maps old and new, contemporary cartoons and paintings, startling artefacts and vivid reconstructions of ancient buildings, shine a fresh light on all aspects of the city's constantly changing story. Invasions, epidemics, riots, pubs, shrines, crime, gentrification, immigrant communities, urban development and art are all here. Special 'Survivals' sections even show where remains of buildings from London's past can still be seen today. The daily lives of Londoners and the city's chequered history come alive in this book as never before.

'Successful medical leaders are usually, but not always, experienced and credible clinicians with good people skills, who look beyond the boundaries of their own specialty or institution, who are positive and perseverant and who are prepared to take reasonable risks to achieve their goals. Most importantly they know how to engage their colleagues and effect change. They understand the principles of organisational performance and the balance between professional autonomy and corporate behaviour - ' Sir Bruce Keogh, in the Foreword This book is a comprehensive account of the key aspects of medical leadership. Easy to read and highly accessible, it explores how the medical profession has evolved in tandem with administrative and structural aspects of the NHS: previously reluctant leaders, doctors are increasingly positive about adopting management and organisational responsibility. Assuming leadership roles at all stages of their training and career is a progressively vital component of the definition of a 'good doctor'. Completely up-to-date, this book features exciting and critical developments such as the embedding of the Medical Leadership Competency Framework as a statutory element of the training and development of all doctors, and the establishment of a new Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management. It is highly recommended, inspiring reading for all medical professionals taking on formal leadership roles. Junior doctors, too, will find much of interest.

When Melissa Clark purchased a box of old scrapbooks online, she knew only that she had bought something relating to the University of Utah and Zion Park. What came in the mail was much more than she had expected. Instead of random mementos, two albums arrived full of photographs and newspaper clippings dating to 1920 that document a trip made by six young women from the University of Utah into the newly formed Zion National Park. Part of a promotional campaign developed by the Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad to advertise its national park shuttle service, the women entered Zion Canyon as its first offical tourists. When Melissa bought those timeworn scrapbooks she found a forgotten treasure: the opening of Zion. With text by John Clark, the scrapbooks are now the basis of a one-of-a-kind publication. Part fashion spread, part adventure guide, and all Utah cultural treasure, "Opening Zion "is a stunning visual record of the park. Remarkably detailed black-and-white photographs show the young adventurers scrambling over rocky outcrops, pondering the dizzying height of Zion's sheer walls, and singing camp songs by the campfire. We are introduced anew to the "gigantic grandeur" of Zion National Park. As one of the women wrote, "One can think only beautiful thoughts amid such splendor.""
