Welsh Castle Builders

Welsh Castle Builders

The Edwardian castles of north Wales were built by a Savoyard master mason, but also by many other artisans from Savoy. What is more extraordinary, is that the constables of Flint, Rhuddlan, Conwy and Harlech were also Savoyards, the Justiciar and Deputy Justiciar at Caernarfon were Savoyards and the head of the English army leading the relief of the sieges of Flint and Rhuddlan was a future Count of Savoy. The explanatory story is fundamentally of two men, the builder of castles, Master James of St George and Justiciar Sir Othon de Grandson, and the relationship of these two men with King Edward I. But it is also the story of many others, a story that begins with the marriage of Alianor de Provence to Edward's father, Henry III, and the influx of her kinsmen to England, such as Pierre de Savoie. It is impossible to understand the development of the castles in north Wales without an understanding of the Savoyards, where they came from and their impact on English and Welsh history. The defining work of Arnold Taylor in exploring the Savoyard history of Welsh castles is now many years past, and mostly out of print, it is time for the story to be revisited and expanded upon, in the light of new evidence.
Early English Performance: Medieval Plays and Robin Hood Games
Covering a period of nearly 40 years’ work by the author this collection of essays in the Shifting Paradigms in Early English Drama Studies series brings the perspective of a Drama academic and practitioner of early English plays to the understanding of how medieval plays and Robin Hood games of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries were performed. It explores why, where, when, and how the plays happened, who took part, and who were the audiences. The insights are informed by a combination of research and the public presentation of surviving texts. The research included in the volume unites the early English experiences of religious and secular performance. This recognition challenges the dominant critical distinction of the past between the two and the consequent privileging of biblical and moral plays over secular entertainments. What further binds, rather than separates, the two is that the destination of funds raised by the different activities maintained the civic and parochial needs of the institutions upon which the people depended. This collection redefines the inclusive nature and common interests of the purposes that lay behind generically different undertakings. They shared an extraordinary investment of human and financial resources in the anticipation of a profit that was pious and practical. (CS1081).

Winner of the 2022 Living Now Book Award for Health/WellnessFeatured In The Washington Post's "10 Books To Read In May 2021" A surprisingly open memoir co-authored by the married duo of a world class oncologist and a cancer survivor about love, pain, hope, strength and resilience while navigating the overwhelming breast cancer advocacy movement. Off Our Chests recounts the story of Liza and John’s experience with her diagnosis and treatment. Written in alternating voices, Liza details her treatment, the complex decisions she had to make throughout her course of chemotherapy and radiation, including clinical trial participation and an elective double mastectomy, the added complexity of being treated at the cancer center of which John was the chief of hematology and oncology, and the emotional impact of knowing she may die as a young woman with young children. John, who lost his own mother to cancer at the age of 13, provides an inside look into the world of cancer care and research, but also the perspective of someone who understands the medicine but who was unprepared for assuming the role of caregiver and worried husband. John adds insights into his world of running the clinical operations of the cancer center where Liza would receive her care, commentary on the breast cancer machine, the need for clinical research, the high cost of cancer care, and an easy to understand explanation of the clinical and scientific background of oncology. While they both felt that they were already expert commentators on their own “Cancer Channel” during the course of Liza's illness, they both came to realize how little understanding they truly had of what a cancer diagnosis does to the patient, caregivers, children, family members, and friends. Liza and John share their most intimate thoughts, including many that were previously unsaid—even between the two of them. Both gain an understanding of the other’s life, a deeper appreciation of what it means to be a cancer patient, and of the emotional strains of being an oncologist where so many of the patients die on their watch.

Almost everything we consume online is free. Email, search, news, entertainment. But those apps on our phones aren't really free--so if we're not paying, who is? The surveillance marketing industry. They're the customer. We're the product. It didn't have to be this way.* Web pioneers tried to invent new payment methods.* Google's founders were dead set against advertising.* Email wasn't always open to data mining.Yet here we are. Why?Because businesses can exploit our belief that "Information wants to be free." It started way back in the early days of the republic, evolved with newspapers, radio and broadcast TV, and persists today online. In Free Is Bad digital marketing entrepreneur John Marshall explains how all that happened, and what you can do about it. It's an exploration of the web industry's early history and its search for viable business models. And it explains how an evolutionary accident in the design of the web resulted in the ad-tech industry, enabling "free" as the default model for technology products like search and email, and for media products like news and entertainment.* How did we become the product?* Why has that led to the fracturing of society?* How are new, people-first businesses improving matters?Free Is Bad offers not just a critique but optimism for a future where we control our online destiny. It also provides practical steps that will immediately improve your privacy and the quality of the information you consume.Ultimately we're better off being the customer and not the product, because Free Is Bad.

John Marshall - The Life of John Marshall. Volume I of IV: 'The power to tax is the power to destroy''
John Marshall is a man who has become unfamiliar to many. Born on September 24th 1755, Marshall served and fought for the Continental Army in many battles in its long fight for independence from the British Crown. During the Wars latter stages he was admitted to the state bar and won election to the Virginia House of Delegates. From there he played a major part in that state's ratification of the United States Constitution. A request from President John Adams saw him travel to France in 1797 to help end attacks on American shipping in what was known as the XYZ Affair. Returning to the United States he won election to the United States House of Representatives and emerged as a leader of the Federalist Party in Congress. In 1800 he was appointed Secretary of State and became an important figure in the Adams administration. In 1801, Adams appointed Marshall to the Supreme Court and he quickly emerged as the key figure on the court and became its Chief Justice. Under his leadership the Court moved decisively to issuing a single majority opinion that clearly set out its ruling. Marshall upheld the principle of judicial review, whereby courts could strike down federal and state laws if they conflicted with the Constitution. With this the principle of separation of powers was more easily enabled and the position of the American judiciary as an independent and co-equal branch of government was made de-facto. John Marshall remains the longest-serving chief justice and fourth-longest serving justice in Supreme Court history. He died on July 6th, 1835.
