'A convincing case for socialist democratic planning as the only way to meet the needs of billions of humans without destroying the planet' - Michael Roberts In a world gripped by endless crisis and climate breakdown, the demand to reshape our economic system has never been more urgent. Reclaiming the Future by Simon Hannah is a beginner’s guide to planning a new economy, taking readers on a transformative journey towards a radically democratic society, where the power and control over our lives are firmly in our hands. Decades of right-wing scaremongering has tried to consign economic planning to the dustbin, but the need for it is greater than ever – it might be the only thing that can save us from climate catastrophe. In this myth-busting and accessible guide, Hannah suggests the building blocks for a grassroots economy of radical abundance within planetary limits.
After years of growing overweight and out of shape, something had to change. The sport of running was my saving grace and within the span of two years I had dropped 25% of my body weight, while at the same time my running results improved dramatically. Then came a mind-bending shock that blindsided me, and everyone I know. As a 48 year old marathon runner on the verge of breaking the three hour barrier, I suddenly found myself lying on the floor after suffering a stroke brought on by an 11mm hole in my heart. The fallout from this episode was far reaching and linger to this day. However, so have the surprising running results ever since the surgery to repair it.From reaching the depths of depression to the heights of running joy, follow my story as I battle my way back from the stroke and see the consequences of having a fully functional heart.
*A Guardian Book of the Day* The defeat of socialist firebrand Jeremy Corbyn as Labour Leader in 2019 confirmed Tony Benn’s famous retort 'the Labour party has never been a socialist party, although there have always been socialists in it.' For over a hundred years, the British Labour Party has been a bastion for working class organisation and struggle. However, has it ever truly been on the side of the workers? Where do its interests really lie? And can we rely on it to provide a barrier against right-wing forces? Simon Hannah’s smart and succinct history of the Labour left guides us through the twists and turns of the party, from the Bevanite movement and the celebrated government of Clement Attlee, through the emergence of a New Left in the 1970s and the Blairism of the 1990s, to Corbyn’s defeat and his replacement by Keir Starmer. This new edition is updated throughout, with a new final chapter and conclusion bringing the story up to date.

When John McDonnell began his coaching career at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville--choosing it over Norman, Oklahoma, because Fayetteville reminded him of his native Ireland--he could hardly have imagined that he would become the most successful coach in the history of American collegiate athletics. But, in thirty-six years at the university, he amassed a staggering résumé of accomplishments, including forty national championships (eleven cross country, nineteen indoor track, and ten outdoor track), the most by any coach in any sport in NCAA history. His teams at Arkansas won the triple crown (a championship in cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track in a single school year) a record five times. The Razorbacks also won eighty-three conference championships (thirty-eight in the Southwest Conference and forty-six in the Southeastern Conference), including thirty-four consecutive conference championships in cross country from 1974 to 2008. McDonnell coached 185 All-Americans, fifty-four individual national champions, and twenty-three Olympians. And from 1984 to 1995, his Razorback teams won twelve consecutive NCAA Indoor Track Championships, the longest streak of national titles by any school in any sport in NCAA history. This biography tells the story of the McDonnell's life and legacy, from his childhood growing up on a farm in 1940s County Mayo, Ireland, to his own running career, to the beginnings of his life as a coach, to all the great athletes he mentored along the way.
