With the economic crisis that began in 2008, a long-standing trend toward increased regulation is becoming a flood. The clamor for improved enterprise risk management and the complexity of multinational compliance present executives with a dramatically new array of challenges. Governance should offer solutions, but it is clear that yesterday’s governance practices aren’t up to the task. In both design and implementation, they are too disconnected and incomplete to fully address our complex compliance and risk management puzzle. Executives get only fragmented views of their true business performance, and inefficiencies drive up costs. The consequences of inadequate governance were demonstrated in the economic meltdown of 2008. As the world struggles to recover from that crisis, business is now faced with a confusing array of evolving regulations, the challenge of managing compliance across multinational organizations and a new imperative for risk management that is coordinated across the enterprise. It’s clear that yesterday’s governance practices don’t meet today’s need for centralized controls, integrated compliance and risk management and greater transparency. The need for organizations to change—and change now—is clear. Under Control captures decades of business governance experience from many of the leading authorities at CA, Inc. This book sets out not only to explain the essential challenges of effective business governance, but to help you build solutions for your organization based on lessons learned at CA from its customers and in its own corporate structure. From governing the organization’s policies as a whole instead of in silos, to a department-by-department look at the role and impact of governance, to governing your green initiatives, to the role of the board of directors, to the importance of risk management, this book lays out some of the strategies and processes that may help yourorganization manage its risk and regulatory requirements. It is clear that the governance standards in the past were inadequate, and that risks have not been properly assessed or understood. This book is a first step in solving this problem so that your organization is prepared and able to respond and thrive in today’s rapidly evolving environment. Under Control is the first book published in the new CAPress imprint, a joint publishing program between Apress and CA Inc. “One of the defining factors of the first decade of the 21st century has been the increase of regulation and governance. To explain these trends, and the various best practices for ensuring governance, enterprise IT management solutions provider CA Inc. enlisted more than a dozen subject matter experts from its ranks to contribute content. The resulting book explores the need for broad governance, different areas where governance is important, and various ways for organizations to manage and implement compliance, including IT governance, project portfolio management, information governance and sustainability management. The book, while largely vendor-neutral, draws on CA's experience creating governance solutions as well as managing its own governance issues.” —Aaron Smith, Projects@Work
This recipe book is a collection of some of my favorite snacks and treats. For the most part, they are originals that I created in my kitchen. They have been designed specifically for the freeze dryer. It is envisioned that you will use this book in conjunction with my videos on YouTube and is not meant to be a replacement for the videos. I believe that much can be learned by watching the videos and using the hard copy of the recipes together.

First published in 1992, this book presents unique quantitative data on the content coverage of primary education in a large number of countries since 1920. It demonstrates that these curricular outlines tend to be surprisingly similar across very disparate countries, and suggests the world processes that produced this result. Specifically, the study shows that the contemporary primary curriculum dates from changes in the late nineteenth century; that there has been a general shift towards a ‘social studies’ subject; that instruction in mathematics and sciences has tended to expand; that there have been substantial increases in foreign language instruction (and changes in the languages taught); and that instruction in the arts and physical education come to the standard world education model much later than other subjects. This work will be of particular interest to those studying primary curriculum, international education and the sociology of education.

It's the year 2520, a time of great importance, as the world's population anticipates the return of Halley's Comet. Beginning at the Park Avenue Amory Antiques show in New York City, and ending at the Hamptons Summer Classic on Long Island, Antique Showtime traces the antics and adventures of a group of antique dealers navigating their way through an increasingly uncertain world. John Meyer, a 25 year veteran of the antique business, offers an incredibly insightful, yet humorous, account of the trade. On top of that, he weaves in a murder mystery, a love story and philosophical Taoist musings. Despite the futuristic setting, Meyer shows that human nature remains the same throughout the ages. Anyone who has ever visited an antique show, or better yet worked at one, will revel in the novel's hilariously eccentric characters and situations, For those who haven't, let John Meyer be your insider guide to the weird and wild world of the antique-show business.

This book covers mobility with WiMAX and Wi-Fi. This rigorous tutorial provides the technical guidance needed to design and integrate Wi-Fi and Wi-MAX into existing 2.5 and 3G wireless systems. "3G Wireless with 802.16 and 802.11" makes manageable the in-demand design and re-engineering tasks involved in adding Internet and broadband capabilities to existing wireless phone networks. Look inside for the engineering specifics you need to: design and integrate 802.16 into RF systems; configure Wi-Fi for fixed wireless delivery; integrate Wi-Fi into mobile wireless systems; integrate WiMax and Wi-Fi into a mobile wireless system; and, learn 802.20 design parameters.Written by hands-on communications engineers, this remarkable guide clearly shows you how to approach the many issues confronting designer/integrators, including: an introduction - from Wireless Mobility Concept to Fixed Wireless (LMDS, MMDS), and 802.X Radio Engineering, from Generic Radio Systems to Bi-Dimensional Amplifiers Network Engineering, from Basic Switching to the Backhaul Digital Wireless Systems, from Enhancements over Analog to 2.5G/3G 2.5G/3G Integration with Wi-Fi and WiMax 802.1 1, from Hotspots to VPNs, SOHO, and More 802.16, from RF Design Considerations to Integration with 802.11/Mobility 802.20 and Integration with 802.11 and 2.5G/3G Convergence Wireless Mobility, including Various User Devices, and Smart Switches 4G.
The relationship between American Indians and the U.S. political system is both vitally important and unique. Yet American Indians—as individuals and as tribal nations—typically receive scant attention in introductory courses on American government and politics. This is the only reader on Native America and U.S. politics designed to be incorporated into introductory government courses. It will help students to obtain a clearer understanding of such contemporary issues as Indian fishing rights and gaming casinos and to see topics central to the course—the Constitution, the structure of federalism, citizenship, and civil liberties—from the perspective of groups that have often sought a protected place outside the U.S. polity rather than inclusion within.Enabling students to compare the American Indian experience with the ideas presented in other course materials, the readings in this book are keyed to the topics most commonly found in the course syllabi. Selected for their insight and accessibility as well as diversity of viewpoints and topics, the essays provide a unique insight into the character of the American political system from the perspective of American Indians, teaching the reader much about both the tribes and the character of politics and government in the U.S. generally.
