Culture and the Political Economy of Schooling
Since the global financial crisis of 2007-08 the question of the aims of schooling have assumed greater importance. There has been no ‘return to normal’, yet young people are encouraged to ‘Keep calm and go to university’. Culture and the Political Economy of Schooling explores the possibilities for the emergence of a progressive agenda for schooling.Culture and the Political Economy of Schooling provides educators and social scientists with the essential background required to understand changes in schooling since the Second World War. It introduces theories of the economic crisis, and explores their educational implications, before going on to provide accounts of how politics and culture have shaped debates about schooling. This cultural political economy approach is applied to issues such as social class, race, the brave new worlds of work, the dangerous rise of creative education, and the increasingly urgent question of inequality. The final parts of the book explore the educational challenges of the Anthropocene and the changing conceptions of knowledge in schools and finally consider alternatives to contemporary schooling. The students in our schools today will face a future framed by the twin crises of economy and environment, prompting an urgent rethink of education. Written in an accessible and engaging manner, this book is an essential guide for thinking about the past, present and futures of education. It will be of great interest to researchers and graduate students of education studies, curriculum studies, sociology of education, education politics and education policy.

This explosive book blows the lid on one of the most shocking crimes of our modern era. But it does more than that. How They Murdered Princess Diana is the most complete evidence-based account of the assassination of Princess Diana yet written. It delivers on providing answers to many of the key questions surrounding the 1997 Paris crash that took the lives of Diana and her lover Dodi Fayed - Who did it? Why was Diana assassinated? How was it carried out? It also exposes the massive inter-governmental cover-up that has taken place throughout the 17 years since the deaths. This book takes the reader through the entire story - right from the breakdown of the Diana-Charles marriage through to the 2013 sham police "scoping" of allegations of SAS involvement made by Soldier N. It covers the critical events that took place in Paris on the last day of Diana and Dodi's lives. It reveals that the crash in the tunnel was orchestrated by MI6 on the orders of senior British royals. Princess Diana survived the crash but was effectively murdered by deliberate mistreatment in the ambulance by people who were supposed to be saving her. The individuals involved in the murders are exposed - it is revealed that Sherard Cowper-Coles, former UK ambassador to Saudi Arabia, headed the MI6 operation on the ground in Paris. The roles of other operatives in this highly coordinated assassination are addressed in detail. This is the first book to cover the complete story in such chilling detail - a true account using the witnesses own words that at times will leave the reader shocked, aghast and breathless. How They Murdered Princess Diana shows that the 2007-8 London inquest into the deaths - headed by Lord Justice Scott Baker - was one of the most inept and corrupt inquests in the history of the British judicial system. It also exposes the 2004-6 Scotland Yard Paget investigation as a huge farce that was more dedicated to covering up the facts of what occurred than to uncovering truth. The perpetrators never thought anyone would or could ever do a full investigation piecing it all together - but this is exactly what John Morgan has done. As a result of nine years of investigative research he has produced the definitive work on the Paris assassination - the uncensored record of what occurred, how it was done and who did it. Eminent QC Michael Mansfield - who served throughout the six months of the London inquest - has said: "I have no doubt that the volumes written by John Morgan will come to be regarded as the 'Magnum Opus' on the crash". How They Murdered Princess Diana is the long-awaited abridgement of the six volumes of the highly-acclaimed Diana Inquest series. It documents the shocking truth - the shameful account of the state-sponsored assassination of Britain and the world's most loved princess, Diana Princess of Wales. The Geometrization Conjecture

The Geometrization Conjecture

John Morgan; Gang Tian

American Mathematical Society

sidottu
This book gives a complete proof of the geometrization conjecture, which describes all compact 3-manifolds in terms of geometric pieces, i.e., 3-manifolds with locally homogeneous metrics of finite volume. The method is to understand the limits as time goes to infinity of Ricci flow with surgery. The first half of the book is devoted to showing that these limits divide naturally along incompressible tori into pieces on which the metric is converging smoothly to hyperbolic metrics and pieces that are locally more and more volume collapsed. The second half of the book is devoted to showing that the latter pieces are themselves geometric. This is established by showing that the Gromov-Hausdorff limits of sequences of more and more locally volume collapsed 3-manifolds are Alexandrov spaces of dimension at most 2 and then classifying these Alexandrov spaces. In the course of proving the geometrization conjecture, the authors provide an overview of the main results about Ricci flows with surgery on 3-dimensional manifolds, introducing the reader to this difficult material. The book also includes an elementary introduction to Gromov-Hausdorff limits and to the basics of the theory of Alexandrov spaces. In addition, a complete picture of the local structure of Alexandrov surfaces is developed. All of these important topics are of independent interest.

Surrender to a wild river and unexpected things can happen. Time on the water can produce moments of pristine clarity or hatch wild thoughts, foster a deep connection with the real world or summon the spiritual. River of Light is centered in one man's meditations while traveling on a river. John Morgan spent a week traveling the Copper River in South central Alaska, and the resulting encounters form the heart of this book-length poem. The river's shifting landscape enriches the poem's meditative mood, while currents shape the poem and the pacing of its lines. The mystic poet Kabir is Morgan's internal guide and serves as a divine foil throughout the trip. Artwork by distinguished Alaska artist Kesler Woodward is a sublime companion to the text. A combination of adventurer's tale and spiritual quest, River of Light takes the reader on a soulful journey that is both deeply personal and profoundly universal.
