The European Commission of the Twenty-First Century

The European Commission of the Twenty-First Century

The European Commission is arguably the world's most powerful international administration. It plays a central role in the political system of the European Union. The Commission is a permanent presence in the life of the member states, but its influence is felt far beyond their borders. Viewed historically as the motor of European integration, the Commission is the subject of intense controversy. It is portrayed frequently as technocratic, monolithic, and unaccountable, but also as fragmented and weakly led. According to accepted wisdom, it is populated by career bureaucrats, who want only to expand the competencies of the Union and therefore their own power. This book tests these views. It asks: Who are the people who work for the organization? What are their educational and professional backgrounds? What do officials believe about the role of the Commission in the EU today and whether the Union should have more or less power? What leads them to choose to pursue a career in the Commission, and how do they navigate its complexities? How does the Barroso Commission compare to previous Commissions? How harmonious are relations between cabinets and the services? What has been the impact on the Commission of reform and of the 'big bang' enlargement? Co-authored by an international team of researchers, this book draws on original data from the largest attitudinal survey ever conducted by independent researchers inside the Commission, as well as a structured programme of interviews with senior officials. It provides an authoritative account of the European Commission of the twenty-first century.
Introduction to Thomistic Philosophy

Introduction to Thomistic Philosophy

John Peterson

University Press of America
2012
nidottu
This book introduces readers to Thomistic philosophy through selected topics such as being, God, teleology, truth, persons and knowledge, ethics, and universals. John Peterson discusses metaphysics and the essence-existence distinction and presents what he believes is Aquinas’ strongest theistic proof. He offers a new defense Aquinas’ idea of natural ends based on the distinction between immanent and transient change. Unveiling the complexity of Aquinas’ account of truth, Peterson shows the hierarchical levels of truth in the thought of St. Thomas. The book explains why Aquinas would reject Cartesian dualism as well as both materialism and epiphenomenalism on the body-mind issue. Defending the basis of Aquinas’ natural-law ethics, Introduction to Thomistic Philosophy reveals the role of universalizability and the relation of right and good in his ethics.

Originally published in 1959, this book was written to assist medical students in viewing their child patients within a social context. It provides a framework within which trainee doctors can understand the broader needs of the patient, encouraging a more complex view of the medical environment than one limited to academic detachment. The book is divided into ten chapters, the first five chapters are devoted to broader environmental concerns, whilst the remainder are based around the direct relationship between the physician and the child. It will be of value to anyone with an interest in the history of medicine, sociology or anthropology.

In the autumn of 1944 the Second World War was coming to an end. In the Atlantic the U-boats had been beaten back through a massive programme of Allied shipbuilding combined with tactical, technological and intelligence improvements. The threat to Allied shipping had diminished. But it had not disappeared, and a lone U-boat on its first active patrol slipped into the North Channel; in just a few days five ships lay broken on the seabed including the Empire Heritage, one of the largest Allied ships lost during the war, and the Jacksonville, an American tanker sailing out of New York. In Darkest Before Dawn John Peterson presents the story for the first time of how U-482 managed to slip undetected into the busy shipping lanes of the North Channel and carry out the last great U-boat patrol of the war. It is the story of the attack, the aftermath and the men involved, including the aristocratic U-boat commander von Matushka, who was on the Bismarck when it was sunk earlier in the war – was he driven by revenge to torpedo the Pinto, a rescue ship trying to pick up the survivors of Empire Heritage – an act that some claimed to be a war crime? Based on new research and previously unpublished material, Darkest Before Dawn presents the definitive account of the attack on convoy HX-305 and unravels the mystery of the fate of U-482.

Kharia, spoken in central-eastern India, is a member of the southern branch of the Munda family, which forms the western branch of the Austro-Asiatic phylum, stretching from central India to Vietnam. The present study provides the most extensive description of Kharia to date and covers all major areas of the grammar. Of particular interest in the variety of Kharia described here, is that there is no evidence for assuming the existence of parts-of-speech, such as noun, adjective and verb. Rather functions such as reference, modification and predication are expressed by one of two syntactic structures, referred to here as 'syntagmas'. The volume will be of equal interest to general linguists from the fields of typology, linguistic theory, areal linguistics, Munda linguistics as well as South Asianists in general.

Poetry. "I call this collection NEWS OF THE DAY to indicate two things.First, some of these pieces were written for specific events;momentary poetic statements of the events of the day. 'The Social, 'written as a comment on the legacy of the left in the early days ofClinton's presidency, was one of these pieces, as was '28 Years'written after an invitation by Terry Hertzler to read at a Veteran's Daypoetry reading. Second, some pieces were written with specificevents in mind like 'Voice, ' written as a statement about Reagan's dirtywar in Nicaragua. Certainly the piece written on hearing of thepassing of Allen Ginsberg, that is the dedication piece, is one ofthese. And 'Impeachment, ' written about, what else, the Clintonimpeachment, took a long time to write and had to be concise giventhe excess of the thing itself. The poems of the second section, Poems out of Philosophy, were written in the aftermath of September 11th and during a periodof travel, mostly in the south. They seem to be more philosophicalwhich, like poems associated with timely events, can lend a weightthat if not handled well can crush the poetry. This is a chance I amwilling to take to say what I feel need be said"--from the author's Acknowledgme

Historical Muscat is an attempt to define and explain the historical environment that determined the significance and design of Oman’s capital city Muscat, its twin city Matrah, and their environs prior to 1970. It also examines how the development of the Muscat conurbation since 1970 has transcended the historical boundaries of the existing settlements and how the process of development has proceeded largely without any consideration of the impact on Muscat’s tangible or remembered history. At the heart of the book is a historical gazetteer of forts, gates, palaces, mosques, houses, quarters, settlements, and other sites covering the broader Muscat region from Bandar Jissah to al-Sib. The text is accompanied by a large number of illustrations, including maps from various eras and both historical and more contemporary photographs.
Father Brown of the Church of Rome: Selected Mystery Stories

Father Brown of the Church of Rome: Selected Mystery Stories

IGNATIUS PRESS
2002

This is a unique collection of ten of Chesterton's famous Father Brown stories which puts special emphasis on the role that Brown's Catholic faith played in helping him solve the murder mysteries. As Dorothy Sayers once wrote, Chesterton was "the first man of our time to introduce the great name of God into a detective story ... to enlarge the boundaries of the detective story by making it deal with death and real wickedness and real, that is to say, divine judgment." This paperback Father Brown edition includes generous footnotes (not available in other editions) which help to clarify the literary and historical allusions made by Father Brown. It is based on the texts of the original editions by Chesterton for assurance of complete authenticity, and is set in easily readable type. These are excellent short detective yarns in the classic British tradition of Sherlock Holmes - puzzling concoctions of mysterious crimes, dubious suspects and ambiguous clues. They are among the very best of the Father Brown stories.
Introduction to Scholastic Realism

Introduction to Scholastic Realism

John Peterson

Peter Lang Publishing Inc

sidottu
Scholastic realism is a type of moderate realism. As such, it falls between platonism and nominalism on the issue of universals. Universals, strictly speaking, only exist in minds, but they are founded on real relations of similarity in the world. Scholastic realism goes beyond moderate realism and affirms that universals also exist transcendently; but instead of having a separated existence, transcendent universals exist in God's mind. This work argues that moderate realism is implied by the correct analysis of predication and persons, and that Scholastic realism, in particular, is implied by the correct analysis of knowledge, truth, and right action.

nidottu
Based on exhaustive research, this book explains how the European Union makes decisions in seven major policy sectors. Written in a clear, user-friendly style, it brings the EU alive for a student and non-specialist audience. The book's central themes are that informal norms often matter more than formal rules, agency often matters more than structure, and abrupt change often punctuates deadlock. It offers a theoretically-based introduction to the lively, humorous and fascinating politics of a unique experiment in modern governance.

Every Friday in Jerusalem, Franciscan monks take groups of pilgrims down the Via Dolorosa, the road Christ may have walked on his way to the cross. Stopping at each of fourteen locations that mark events in the final days of Christ s life, the pilgrims recall the Passion story and offer prayers for the world. In A Walk in Jerusalem, The Rev. Canon John L. Peterson, Secretary General of the Anglican Communion, brings new life to this centuries-old ritual known as the Stations of the Cross. Illustrated with a map, 14 black-and-white photographs, and 14 pen-and-ink drawings, this helpful guide provides the appropriate episode of the Passion story along with a meditation and brief liturgy that apply that story to today s world. Designed for use on Good Friday or general devotions, A Walk in Jerusalem offers new insight into the Passion Narratives and encouragement to live as Christ taught.

The conflict in Bosnia, disputes within the new World Trade Organizatiion and debates about NATO enlargement all illustrate a single point: no relationship is more important in determining the state of international relations than the alliance between Europe and America. Contrary to accepted wisdom, John Peterson argues that the end of the Cold War actually enhances the prospects for partnership between the United States and the European Union. Completely updated, this book offers a clear and penetrating analysis of the problems and opportunities facing the transatlantic alliance.
