The Watts Memorial to Heroic Self-Sacrifice in Postman’s Park, London, is a Victorian monument containing fifty-four ceramic plaques commemorating sixty-two individuals, each of whom lost their own life while attempting to save another. Every plaque tells a tragic and moving story, but the short narratives do little more than whet the appetite and stimulate the imagination about the lives and deaths of these brave characters. Based upon extensive historical research, this book will, for the first time, provide a full and engaging account of the dramatic circumstances behind each of the incidents, and reveal the vibrant and colourful lives led by those who tragically died.
Revealing Heaven by John Price has descriptive copy which is not yet available from the Publisher.
Colony to nation? Isolationism to internationalism? WASP society to a multicultural Canada? Focusing on imperial conflicts in the Pacific, Orienting Canada disrupts these familiar narratives in Canadian history by tracing the relationship between racism and Canadian foreign policy.Grounded in transnationalism and anti-racist theory, this book reassesses critical transpacific incidents, including Vancouver's race riots of 1907, the Chinese head tax, the wars in the Pacific from 1937 to 1945, the internment of Japanese Canadians, and Canada's early intervention in Vietnam. Shocking revelations about the effects of racism and war into the 1960s are tempered by stories of community resilience and transformation. As a transpacific lens on the past, Orienting Canada deflects Canada's European gaze back onto itself to reveal images that both provoke and unsettle.

An intriguing look at the full range of value methods brought together for the first time The biggest block to success in the stock market is unconscious investing, or following the crowd without asking the right questions such as: "What is it really worth?" Even more fundamental is: "What rate of return can I confidently expect to get?" Without having the methods to answer these questions is like trying to sail a boat without a rudder. The Conscious Investor covers each of the main methods used to calculate value or return in the stock market, along with descriptions of how and when to use them, as well as their strengths and weaknesses. Interspersed throughout the methods are the timeless investment principles of Benjamin Graham and Warren Buffett. 'In the Blink of an Eye' is a compelling, poetically courageous collection of poems which evokes a long, and intensely felt, experience of life. It is full of gems of expression, emotion and thought. John wrote most of the poems in his middle thirties during a challenging time in his life. The only exception was the Preface which came to him in 2001 while he was in Australia. As John says: 'I see the Preface as being inspired by what I call the "Crocodile Dundee" philosophy of the comparative insignificance of humans compared to the everlasting environment we live in.'
A tireless and discerning advocate for contemporary practitioners of creative nonfiction, Ned Stuckey-French was at the center of every national discussion about the genre. He greatly contributed to our scholarly understanding of the history of the essay and was working on his first essay collection when he died of cancer in 2019. That collection, One by One, the Stars, presents new, highly personal essays tracing Stuckey-French’s childhood in Indiana and a burgeoning interest, during adolescence, in politics and social justice to his life as a father, teacher, and writer. Thematic threads connect these elements, and foremost is his growing commitment to activism on behalf of the disadvantaged, overlooked, or threatened. The volume also features some of Stuckey-French’s “greatest hits” as a public scholar and writer, including “Don’t Be Cruel: An Argument for Elvis,” “Our Queer Little Hybrid Thing: Toward a Definition of the Essay,” and his popular essay on his Facebook addiction—for which he was widely known.Along the way, his stories and reflections offer fascinating and timely insights into family dynamics, history, politics, ecology, social justice, and literature. All of it is infused with Ned Stuckey-French’s guiding spirit, full of curiosity, compassion, and conviction.

Monster Fables is a fairy tale story about a kindly wizard who lives in a castle and uses his magic to teach and help children who have various social and moral difficulties. It is a collection of 5 different stories - about an Ice Cream Monster, a Toy Thief Monster, a Playground Bully Monster, a Homeless, a Shy Monster, and 3 Class Clown Monsters. Each monster is actually a child that struggles with a problem related to the type of monster that they are transformed into. Near the end of the book, the wizard is revealed and his gift of a special magic potion that transforms each child is explained. The wizard's history and his personal life are explained also in the last section of the book. It was primarily influenced by Disney, and by experiences that I have had while babysitting for my sisters.
