Railroad heiresses Faith, Hope and Charity Pullman are stranded in a snowstorm at the railroad station of Hidden Gulch. Tom Truetrack is the handsome engineer assigned to see to their safety during the trip home. Simon Sidetrack, a villain of the worst sort, is plotting to gain control of the railroad by marrying Faith, the oldest sister. But Faith spurns his advances, so he plots to have her removed temporarily while he passes forged documents at their bank and absconds with all of their inheritance money, but Charity overhears his plot, so he has to remove her too. Shyster Craven arrives in Rock Creek with the intention of starting a bogus bank and fleecing the townspeople of their deposits, then escaping with his ill-gotten gains. He meets with opposition from Allen Beemer, one of the founders and a principal developer of the town. Allen has plans to build a bank of his own. Shyster is aided in his scheme by comely dance hall girl Bubbles O'Leary, who uses her charms to obtain deposits for Shysters First National Bank of the Purple Prairie from townspeople George Canfield, John Reike, Carsten Brandt and Dan Murray. Also arriving in Rock Creek is Amy Meddler, who is an investigative reporter for the Omaha Tattler and Gus Gumshoe, a private detective who has been hired by the Territorial Banking association to determine Shysters whereabouts. Two Women's Suffrage movement stalwarts are also in town with a petition to allow women to vote and meet considerable opposition from all of the male citizens.

The scene is a general store interior in Stafford, Kansas. Proprietor Maude Spickard is constantly harassed by Muskrat Sam Winchester, a local trapper, who is in love with her. Ma is being helped in her store by heiress Nora Larabee, who's family owns the local flour mill. Nate Reese, alias notorious Hogwash Harry, is posing as the editor of the town newspaper while plotting to rid the town of the Larrabee family. Then there is Pelican Pete, a local trapper who is notorious for his tremendous appetite. He falls in love with Nora while attempting to save her and her family from Hogwash's evil plot.

Buttonhooks International, has the same problem that many rich people have....he wants more wealth His plans are to gain complete control of the buttonhook market by whatever means necessary, the more evil and crooked the better His chief competitor, Betty's Buttonhooks of America, has a 55% percent market share, up from a mere 20% a year ago. This is due chiefly to shrewd cost-cutting management by his cousin, owner Betty Bowknot and her clever chief of staff, Ona Shoestring. Barton has inserted a spy at Betty's plant, beautiful and dangerous Victoria Vamp. Together, Bat and Victoria hope to sabotage Betty's business by altering the production machinery so that the buttonhooks produced there are of poor quality. Ona's brother, handsome Ty Shoestring, who is also Betty's plant foreman, has his suspicions about the cause of the company's sudden quality control problems. Will Bat Belfry succeed in his evil scheme? Can Ty and Ona save Betty's Buttonhooks from disaster? And why do Betty and Ty get that vacant lovesick look when they are together? MacArthur (Crash) McCarthy, dashing ace stunt pilot, meets lovely female wing walker Wendy Wingnut at the annual fly-in at Scribner and love is in bloom. Crash has a famous barnstorming airplane act while Wendy is part of an equally famous wing-walking act with her partner, daffy Poppy (Popped) Rivetts. But his jealous rival, Delbert D. Dorkmiester, with the aid of his girl friend, Ursula Undercarriage, has plans to sabotage their planes so he can win the grand prize at the fly-in. Modesty is eager to obtain a contract to provide meals for passengers on the Elkhorn Valley Railroad. Both Ted and Balderdash are smitten by her beauty and compete for her hand. Also, Tizzy Ditherspoon is on board the train fulfilling her duties as Balderdashs long-suffering secretary. Can Tom stop Balderdash from succeeding in his evil scheme? His long-suffering secretary Tizzy nursed Balderdash back to health and in the process fell in love with him. They were soon married, and now Tizzy and Barton spend their lives doing charity work. In their devotion to each other and their good deeds, they are completely unaware that an unscrupulous villainess named Dementia Dismal, under the alias of Dorothy Devine, is plotting to steal away their fortune Hot on her trail is Canadian detective Marcie Moonglow, who has trailed Dorothy all the way from Moose Droppings Saskatchewan. It seems Dementia is an escaped convict who was serving a long sentence there for stealing money from a widows and orphans fund.
