John Richardson

Naval surgeon, Arctic explorer and natural historian, Sir John Richardson (1787–1865) published many works, several of which are reissued in the Cambridge Library Collection, notably the four-volume Fauna Boreali-Americana. At the Haslar Royal Naval Hospital, where he worked towards the end of his career, Richardson built up a library and museum that became renowned for natural history research. His published work was fuelled by his own voyages and the specimens sent back from other expeditions, as was the case for this illustrated work, completed in 1854. Richardson describes the zoological specimens collected during the 1845–51 voyage of the survey ship H.M.S. Herald, which had sailed into Arctic seas and took part in the search for Sir John Franklin. The collected fauna include fossil mammals from the ice cliffs at Eschscholtz Bay in Alaska, first discovered in 1816 by Otto von Kotzebue and his naturalists.

Howard Andrew Knox (1885-1949) served as assistant surgeon at Ellis Island during the 1910s, administering a range of verbal and nonverbal tests to determine the mental capacity of potential immigrants. An early proponent of nonverbal intelligence testing (largely through the use of formboards and picture puzzles), Knox developed an evaluative approach that today informs the techniques of practitioners and researchers. Whether adapted to measure intelligence and performance in children, military recruits, neurological and psychiatric patients, or the average job applicant, Knox's pioneering methods are part of contemporary psychological practice and deserve in-depth investigation. Completing the first biography of this unjustly overlooked figure, John T. E. Richardson, former president of the International Society for the History of the Neurosciences, takes stock of Knox's understanding of intelligence and his legacy beyond Ellis Island. Consulting published and unpublished sources, Richardson establishes a chronology of Knox's life, including details of his medical training and his time as a physician for the U.S. Army. He describes the conditions that gave rise to intelligence testing, including the public's concern that the United States was opening its doors to the mentally unfit. He then recounts the development of intelligence tests by Knox and his colleagues and the widely-discussed publication of their research. Their work presents a useful and extremely human portrait of psychological testing and its limits, particularly the predicament of the people examined at Ellis Island. Richardson concludes with the development of Knox's work in later decades and its changing application in conjunction with modern psychological theory.

Contesting hate draws on a unique five-year dataset, which includes social media data, interviews with digital activists and mainstream media analysis, generated by the project ‘#ContestingIslamophobia: Representation and Appropriation in Mediated Activism’. This book provides an in-depth analysis of how social media have been used to contest the circulation of racialised Islamophobia, in relation to a range of events wherein Islamophobic narratives have been yoked to white supremacism, Hindu nationalism and polarising ‘culture wars’ debates. Focusing on archetypal ‘trigger events’ that have resulted in the intensification of Islamophobic discourse — the Christchurch white supremacist terrorist attacks, Brexit and the Covid-19 pandemic — we identify key actors and networks involved in these narratives, and foreground successful (and less successful) counter-narrative tactics for contesting hate. In the process, we set out a new theoretical and methodological framework for conceptualising and researching digital discrimination and activism.
