Connected Sets in Global Bifurcation Theory
Boris Buffoni; John Toland
Springer International Publishing AG
2025
nidottu
This book explores the topological properties of connected and path-connected solution sets for nonlinear equations in Banach spaces, focusing on the distinction between these concepts. Building on Rabinowitz's dichotomy and classical results on Peano continua, the authors introduce "congestion points"—where connected sets fail to be weakly locally connected—and examine the extent to which their presence is compatible with path-connectedness. Through rigorous analysis and examples, the book provides new insights into global bifurcations. Structured into seven chapters, the book begins with an introduction to global bifurcation theory and foundational concepts in set theory and metric spaces. Subsequent chapters delve into connectedness, local connectedness, and congestion points, culminating in the construction of intricate examples that highlight the complexities of solution sets. The authors' careful selection of material and fluent writing style make this work a valuable resource for PhD students and experts in functional analysis and bifurcation theory.
The Dual of L8(X,L,?), Finitely Additive Measures and Weak Convergence

In measure theory, a familiar representation theorem due to F. Riesz identifies the dual space Lp(X,L,?)* with Lq(X,L,?), where 1/p+1/q=1, as long as 1 = pL8(X,L,?)* cannot be similarly described, and is instead represented as a class of finitely additive measures. This book provides a reasonably elementary account of the representation theory of L8(X,L,?)*, examining pathologies and paradoxes, and uncovering some surprising consequences. For instance, a necessary and sufficient condition for a bounded sequence in L8(X,L,?) to be weakly convergent, applicable in the one-point compactification of X, is given. With a clear summary of prerequisites, and illustrated by examples including L8(Rn) and the sequence space l8, this book makes possibly unfamiliar material, some of which may be new, accessible to students and researchers in the mathematical sciences.

A FICTION HOUSE PRESS BOOK: DREAM WORLD was an experiment by Ziff-Davis Publishing Company and the editors of AMAZING STORIES and FANTASTIC. For three issues in 1957 it lasted before the plug was pulled on the experi-ment. Prior to that, two complete issues of FANTASTIC were devoted to "Dream World" stories, as well as two others stories in another issue. From 1955 and 1956, we present most of those stories.
Analytic Theory of Global Bifurcation
Boris Buffoni; John Toland

Rabinowitz's classical global bifurcation theory, which concerns the study in-the-large of parameter-dependent families of nonlinear equations, uses topological methods that address the problem of continuous parameter dependence of solutions by showing that there are connected sets of solutions of global extent. Even when the operators are infinitely differentiable in all the variables and parameters, connectedness here cannot in general be replaced by path-connectedness. However, in the context of real-analyticity there is an alternative theory of global bifurcation due to Dancer, which offers a much stronger notion of parameter dependence. This book aims to develop from first principles Dancer's global bifurcation theory for one-parameter families of real-analytic operators in Banach spaces. It shows that there are globally defined continuous and locally real-analytic curves of solutions. In particular, in the real-analytic setting, local analysis can lead to global consequences--for example, as explained in detail here, those resulting from bifurcation from a simple eigenvalue. Included are accounts of analyticity and implicit function theorems in Banach spaces, classical results from the theory of finite-dimensional analytic varieties, and the links between these two and global existence theory. Laying the foundations for more extensive studies of real-analyticity in infinite-dimensional problems and illustrating the theory with examples, Analytic Theory of Global Bifurcation is intended for graduate students and researchers in pure and applied analysis.

J. Tolandi Dissertationes Duae, Aedeisidaemon Et Origines Judaicae... presents two dissertations by the influential Irish deist philosopher John Toland, written in Latin. "Aedeisidaemon" explores Toland's unique perspective on superstition and its origins, offering insights into his broader philosophical project of promoting reason and challenging traditional religious beliefs. "Origines Judaicae" delves into the historical origins of Judaism, reflecting Toland's interest in historical criticism and his desire to understand the development of religious thought. This work showcases Toland's erudition and his commitment to Enlightenment ideals. It remains a significant text for scholars of 18th-century philosophy, religious history, and the development of deism.
