CELEBRATING SIXTY YEARS OF BRITAIN'S MOST CONTROVERSIAL COMIC! Violent, gritty and unrelenting, Action comic was the brainchild of Pat Mills and Geoff Kemp. Tasked with creating a new anthology comic for the IPC's boys adventure division, the pair rapidly developed a winning formula: reimagining existing story ideas from fresh perspectives and infusing them with a health dose of modern realism. With strips such as Hookjaw, Dredger, Look Out For Lefty and Blackjack, success was instantaneous but so was the criticism. Many of the press including, The London Evening Standard, The Sun and the Daily Mail were quick to denounce the comic, while Mary Whitehouse and the pressure group, Delegates Opposing Violent Education, piled pressure on the IPC board to do something about it. In less than a year, Action had been pulled from circulation, then returned months later, a sanitised, pale shadow of its former self. But the spark had already been lit. Action had made its mark and became the catalyst for the evolution of the British comics scene, pathing the way for 2000 AD and the British invasion of UK talent into America. Collected here are the first tweleve issues of Action, containing all of the strips and some of the editorial that created so much infamy back in the 1970s.

In Mega-City One, the Judges are the law – acting as judge, jury, and executioner. But how do the citizens really feel about a system where they are powerless? America Jara and Bennett Beeny grow up as best friends, living a fairly trouble-free life in a dangerous city… bar the odd, negative encounter with a Judge. Time draws them apart, and when they are brought back together, Beeny is a successful singer and America has become involved with a terrorist organisation known as Total War, which has the Justice Department in its sights! This dark and complex tale, considered to be one of the best stories to ever come out of the Judge Dredd universe, has been contextualised with contemporarily thematic stories with re-coloured art by Watchman’s John Higgins

Keep Watching the Stars! In 1978, 2000 AD launched a weekly sister comic aimed at an older audience and boasting higher production values – its name was Starlord. A plethora of the best comics writers and artists in the UK ensured the new series was a success. These included 2000 AD’s creator, Pat Mills; co-creators of Judge Dredd, John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra; future Watchmen artist, Dave Gibbons; legendary 2000 AD and Batman writer, Alan Grant; and The Ballad of Halo Jones co-creator, Ian Gibson. Despite outselling 2000 AD, it was merged into the galaxy’s greatest comic after just 22 issues. Against the policy of the time, 2000 AD was the title that was kept. But the legacy of Starlord lives on with its standout strips Strontium Dog and Ro-Busters (a fore-runner of A.B.C Warriors) occupying a place in the hearts of many comic readers to this day. This book collects Starlord starzines 1-12 and the Starlord Summer Special.
