Thoughts Concerning the Present Revival of Religion in New-England. By Jonathan Edwards, ... Abridg'd by John Wesley,
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" is Edwards' most famous sermon, and probably the most famous American sermon. Preached during the Great Awakening, moved its hearers so powerfully that Edwards was unable to finish delivering it. The sermon's power stems not only from Edwards' masterful use of verbal imagery but also from its message that is both personal and universal. It is frequently presented as an outstanding sermon, and also as ememplary oratory."Your wickedness makes you as it were heavy as lead, and to tend downwards with great weight and pressure towards hell; and if God should let you go, you would immediately sink and switfly descend and plunge into the bottomless gulf, and your healthy constitution, and your own care and prudence, and best contrivance, and all your righteousness, would have no more influence to uphold you and keep you out of hell, than a spider's web would have to stop a fallen rock." -- Jonathan Edwards in Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God

Jonathan Edwards (October 5, 1703 - March 22, 1758) was an American revivalist preacher, philosopher, and Congregationalist Protestant theologian. Like most of the Puritans, he held to the Reformed theology. His colonial followers later distinguished themselves from other Congregationalists as "New Lights" (endorsing the Great Awakening), as opposed to "Old Lights" (non-revivalists). Edwards is widely regarded as "one of America's most important and original philosophical theologians". Edwards' theological work is broad in scope, but he was rooted in Reformed theology, the metaphysics of theological determinism, and the Puritan heritage. Recent studies have emphasized how thoroughly Edwards grounded his life's work on conceptions of beauty, harmony, and ethical fittingness, and how central The Enlightenment was to his mindset. Edwards played a critical role in shaping the First Great Awakening, and oversaw some of the first revivals in 1733-35 at his church in Northampton, Massachusetts

Though largely associated with the Great Awakening, Jonathan Edwards leaves an amazing legacy as a theologian and preacher. Wrestling in his day with the Enlightenment and the Age of Reason, he faced the emerging climate of humanistic rationalism over the teaching of a personal and loving God. He battled the problem of spiritual deadness by recognizing the necessity of a personal religious experience and by embracing the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit to awaken and illuminate the heart. Jonathan Edwards left a remarkable body of work, including the seven sermons featured in this collection on the "excellency of Christ." Christ Exalted Sermons of Jonathan Edwards is a fine sampling from this renowned preacher. Each sermon is a brilliant and personal invitation to know God through both our intellect and our affections--compelling us to open our hearts to the sweet love and joy available to us in our life in Christ. This collection includes the following seven sermons: - Safety, Fullness, and Sweet Refreshment in Christ - The Excellency of Christ - Jesus Christ the Same Yesterday, Today, and Forever - Christ Exalted - True Saints, When Absent from the Body, Are Present with the Lord - Christ, the Example of Ministers - Christ's Agony
