For første gong er den kubanske frigjeringshelten og nasjonalskalden José Martí (1853-1895) tilgjengeleg i norsk gjendiktning. Saman med andre historiske latinamerikanarar som Simón Bolívar, San Martín, Hidalgo og Ernesto "Che" Guevara, står José Martí fram som ein av dei mest ruvande personlegdomane i Latin-Amerika si historie. I dag blir Martí rekna som sjølve arketypen på den latinamerikanske intellektuelle gjennom alle tider, og han fortener derfor å bli lesen av langt fleire enn dei som er i stand til å lesa han på originalspråket spansk. Denne samlinga inneheld gjendiktningar frå Ismaelillo, Versos libres, Versos sencillos og Flores del destierro, i tillegg til nokre dikt frå barnebladet La Edad de Oro og spreidde dikt som er blitt samla og utgjevne seinare.
