Es muy c lebre el primer p rrafo: Platero es peque o, peludo, suave; tan blando por fuera, que se dir a todo de algod n, que no lleva huesos. S lo los espejos de azabache de sus ojos son duros cual dos escarabajos de cristal negro. Lo dejo suelto y se va al prado y acaricia tibiamente, roz ndolas apenas, las florecillas rosas, celestes y gualdas... Lo llamo dulcemente: Platero?, y viene a m con un trotecillo alegre, que parece que se r e, en no s qu cascabeleo ideal... La primera edici n se public en 1914 (Ediciones de la lectura), y en 1917 se public la edici n completa, compuesta por 138 cap tulos (Editorial Calleja, Madrid). Quedaba claro que Platero era un texto adulto, aunque por su sencillez y transparencia se adecuara perfectamente a la imaginaci n y al gusto de los ni os. Algunos cap tulos encerraban una cierta cr tica social, revelando una dimensi n del autor que muchos tardaron en advertir. El propio Juan Ram n Jim nez, en un prologuillo a la edici n aclaraba: Yo nunca he escrito ni escribir nada para ni os, porque creo que el ni o puede leer los libros que lee el hombre, con determinadas excepciones que a todos se le ocurren. El poeta ten a la intenci n de ampliar el texto hasta los 190 cap tulos; de hecho, existen tres adicionales, escritos en la d cada de 1920.
