Mouth, lips, tongue, and teeth—speech, pain, and screech—eating, swallowing, spouting off, and spitting—lust and passion: the oral cavity is an extremely stimulating zone of the body, in the truest sense of the word. Science and medicine are not the only fields that have investigated it, though. From antiquity to the present day, art and cultural history have done the same. The Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg has pursued the wide-ranging path of this motif’s history in order to present the first comprehensive show about the mouth in the fall of 2020. The companion publication offers thematically dense essays that not only allow the reader to delve into the topic, but also go far beyond the exhibition itself. The mouth, its inventory and abilities, are closely examined through film history, ethnology, literary theory, and architecture.

Es handelt sich hierbei um Infor- tiksysteme, deren Verhalten von dem mittels Sensorik erfassten Zustand unserer physischen Umgebung beeinflusst wird. Als Kontext werden hierbei die Informationen bezeichnet, die die Situation eines Benutzers oder anderer Entitaten einer Anwendung charakterisieren. K- textinformation wird in so genannten Umgebungsmodellen verwaltet, die ein digitales Abbild eines Ausschnitts unserer physischen Umgebung darstellen. Nahezu alle Anwendungsber- che konnen von solchen Umgebungsmodellen profitieren, so dass man davon ausgehen kann, dass in naher Zukunft die Mehrheit der Informatiksysteme kontextbezogen sein werden. Der 2003 an der Universitat Stuttgart eingerichtete Sonderforschungsbereich 627 Nexus - Umgebungsmodelle ftir mobile kontextbezogene Systeme" erforscht Methoden zur Gener- rung, Verwaltung und Anwendung von Umgebungsmodellen, wobei die Unterstutzung mo- ler Benutzer im Vordergrund steht. Die Vision dieses Vorhabens ist das Konzept eines World Wide Space," also eines weltumspannenden Informationsraums, in den eine Vielzahl von Anbietem Umgebungsmodelle einbringen konnen, die dann zu einem globalen, hoch- namischen digitalen Modell der Welt integriert werden. Im Hinblick auf die Akzeptabilitat der im Rahmen von Nexus entwickelten Technologien ist eine friihzeitige Beriicksichtigung von Aspekten des Datenschutzes von zentraler Bedeutung."

Caravaggio's art is subjected to a political interpretation that draws on Erasmus's writings to explain his paintings. According to Erasmus's Philosophia christiana, in contrast to Gabriele Paleotti's Discorso intorno alle immagini sacre e profane of 1582, the sacred is best expressed through the profane. This textbook presents a direct path from real analysis of one variable to function theory. Classical topics of one-dimensional real analysis, such as differential and integral calculus, are largely presented from a complex perspective. The goal is a self-contained exposition extending to the Runge theorems and the dynamics of entire functions. The fifth edition of this textbook has been completely revised and significantly extended in order to reflect the revolution of geodetic technologies, methods and applications during the last decade. The Global Geodetic Observing System established by the IAG utilizes a variety of techniques to determine the geometric shape of the earth and its kinematics, the variations of earth rotation, and the earth’s gravity field. The societal importance of geodetic products was highlighted by the UN resolution on the Global Geodetic Reference Frame. In this context, both space and terrestrial techniques play a fundamental role. Recent space missions are monitoring climate-relevant processes such as mass transport in the Earth system and sea level changes. The analysis of the time variation of the geodetic products provides the link to neighboring geosciences and contributes to proper modelling of geodynamic processes. New satellite mission concepts and novel technologies such as quantum gravimetry and optical clocks show great potential to further improve the geodetic observing system in the future. The book especially addresses graduate students in the fields of geodesy, geophysics, surveying engineering, geomatics, and space navigation. It should also serve as a reference for geoscientists and engineers facing geodetic problems in their professional work. The book follows the principal directions of geodesy, providing the theoretical background as well as the principles of measurement and evaluation methods, which is enriched with numerous figures. The life and times of Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1526/30–1569) were marked by stark cultural conflict. He witnessed religious wars, the Duke of Alba’s brutal rule as governor of the Netherlands, and the palpable effects of the Inquisition. To this day, the Flemish artist remains shrouded in mystery. We know neither where nor exactly when he was born. But while early scholarship emphasized the vernacular character of his painting and graphic work, modern research has attached greater importance to its humanistic content. Starting out as a print designer for publisher Hieronymus Cock, Bruegel produced numerous print series that were distributed throughout Europe. These depicted vices and virtues alongside jolly peasant festivals and sweeping landscape panoramas. He would eventually increasingly turn to painting, working for the cultural elite of Antwerp and Brussels. This monograph is a testament to Bruegel’s evolution as an artist, one who bravely confronted the issues of his day all the while proposing new inventions and solutions. Rather than idealizing reality, he addressed the horrors of religious warfare and took a critical stand against the institution of the Church. To this end, he developed his own pictorial language of dissidence, lacing innocuous everyday scenes with subliminal statements in order to escape repercussions. This collection captures all the breadth and splendid detail of Bruegel’s oeuvre like never before, and gathers all 40 paintings, 65 drawings, and 89 engravings in pristine reproductions—each piece a unique witness to both the religious mores and the close-knit folk culture of Bruegel’s time.
