Understanding Rook Endgames

Understanding Rook Endgames

Karsten Muller; Yakov Konoval

Gambit Publications Ltd

Endgames with rooks and pawns are the most frequently occurring in chess, arising in about 1 game in 10. If you learn an important technique in this endgame, chances are you will end up using it sooner or later. And there are a great many methods and concepts that can be mastered with a little effort. This book highlights the key themes in rook endings, and at each turn invites the reader to test his knowledge and skills with abundant exercises. Rook endgame theory does not stand still. New practical examples illustrate novel approaches as players seek to pose problems to their opponents Magnus Carlsen has shown that even the driest-looking positions can feature deadly traps. The ongoing creation of new endgame tablebases of which coauthor Yakov Konoval has been at the forefront enables new classes of positions to be assessed with definitive certainty. Using six-man and the brand new seven-man tablebases, the authors re-examine many of the old evaluations and reach new and enlightening conclusions about classic rook endings. You will be startled and amazed, and soon discover that you are becoming a far more effective endgame player. German grandmaster Karsten Muller is arguably the world s foremost writer on chess endgames. His masterwork, Fundamental Chess Endings, is a modern endgame bible and was studied intensively in his youth by current World Champion Magnus Carlsen. Yakov Konoval is a Russian chess-player and programmer who studied at Mikhail Botvinnik s chess school. He has written programs for solving chess problems and has pioneered new techniques for generating endgame tablebases."

This is the very first book to focus exclusively on Hikaru Nakamura, the greatest American chess player since the legendary Robert James Fischer. The book features a prologue penned by Lubomir Kavalek, who was none other than "Bobby's" insider and supporter at the "match of the century" against Boris Spasski in 1972. In this book, grandmaster Karsten Mu¨ller from Hamburg and chess journalist Raymund Stolze from Berlin document the 24-year-old's fascinating journey to the top of world chess. Interestingly, Hikaru was not a typical child prodigy, and at his first Junior World Championships did not even make it onto the winners' podium. Although he won a World Cup medal aged just 13, today he creates true miracles.

The Chess Puzzle Book 2: Test and Improve Your Positional Intuition
International Grandmaster Karsten Muller was born in Hamburg, Germany. He has established himself as one of the great chess authors. His works include the ChessCafe Puzzle Book 1, Danish Dynamite (with Martin Voigt), The Magic of Chess Tactics (with Claus Dieter Meyer), Secrets of Pawn Endings (with Frank Lamprecht) and Fundamental Chess Endings (with Frank Lamprecht). His monthly column Endgame Corner appears at www.ChessCafe.com. This is a unique instructional chess book that aims to help intermediate and advanced players improve their command of one of the most difficult as pects of playing chess - strategy. It does so by offering a large number of examples carefully selected by the author, German grandmaster Karsten Muller. While there are many books and software programs available to assist chess players in improving their tactical ability, there are relatively few that focus on strategic and positional considerations. Working through these positions and exercises is a great way to improve your positional understanding. German grandmaster Dr. Karsten Muller will help you develop your strategic chessplaying skills. As most chess instructors and players know, it is much more difficult to teach and learn strategic concepts than tactics. Topics include: Good and Bad Bishops; Domination; Outposts; Undermining; Opening the Position; Blockade; Improving Piece Placement; Prophylaxis; A Second Front and The Principle of Two Weaknesses; Counterplay; Positional Exchange Sacrifice; Simplification; and Weak Color Complex along with exercises to test your knowledge.

Traps lurk in every stage of a chess game, but they occur especially often in the opening. In this instructional volume, the two internationally recognised masters of the game cover the traps that can be expected after the double advance of the white d-pawn. For every possible opening after 1.d4 -- including the Queen's Gambit or the King's Indian Defense -- there are explanatory texts detailing the most typical trap motifs. Designed to increase combinative ability and systematically expand opening repertoire, this is an essential guide to setting and avoiding opening traps.

Though they appear to be normal moves, opening traps are deft manoeuvres that almost inevitably lead to a rapid win for the trapper. This handy volume details the various types of traps available during a King's Pawn Game and explains how to use them as well as how to avoid getting caught by them. The Italian, French, Spanish, and Sicilian trips -- among many others -- are explained with helpful texts that detail their typical motifs.
Fundamental Chess Endings

Fundamental Chess Endings

Gambit Publications Ltd

In a major event in chess publishing, two German endgame experts have produced a masterly one-volume encyclopaedia that covers all major endgames. This is the first truly modern one-volume endgame encyclopaedia. It makes full use of endgame tablebases and analytical engines that access these tablebases; where previous authors could only make educated guesses, Muller and Lamprecht have often been able to state the definitive truth, or get much closer to it. New time-controls involve competitive games being played to a finish in one session, so it is especially important that chess-players understand the key endgame principles. This book provides comprehensive assistance for any players wishing to study the endgame. In addition to a feast of detailed analysis, the authors emphasize the practical side of endgame play, describing rules of thumb, principles, and thinking methods. Fundamental Chess Endings is both the ideal endgame reference work, and a book that can profitably and enjoyably be read from start to finish.
