CUA Press is proud to announce the CUA Studies in Canon Law. In conjunction with the School of Canon Law of the Catholic University of America, we are making available, both digitally and in print, more than 400 canon law dissertations from the 1920s to 1960s, many of which have long been unavailable. These volumes are rich in historical content, yet remain relevant to canon lawyers today. Topics covered include such issues as abortion, excommunication, and infertility. Several studies are devoted to marriage and the annulment process; the acquiring and disposal of church property, including the union of parishes; the role and function of priests, vicars general, bishops, and cardinals; and juridical procedures within the church. For those who seek to understand current ecclesial practices in light of established canon law, these books will be an invaluable resource.

Feel the eye-opening emotions and opinions of multicultural voices that leave little pieces, shards of reality on each page. The subjects of these poems transcend the possibilities and perspectives of experiences from the unique stories, characters, scars and conflicts of our reality that evoke a surreal spectrum of emotional reactions. Japan's Modern Divide – The Photographs of Hiroshi Hanaya and Kansuke Yamamoto
This title offers a superbly illustrated overview of the evolution of two very different strains of modern Japanese photography. In the 1930s, Japanese photography evolved in two very directions: one toward a documentary style, the other favouring an experimental, or avant-garde, approach strongly influence by Western Surrealism. This book explores these two divergent paths through the work of two remarkable figures: Hiroshi Hamaya and Kansuke Yamamoto. Hiroshi Hamaya (1915-1999) was born and raised in Tokyo and, after an initial period of creative experimentation, turned his attention to recording traditional life and culture. He went on to record cultural changes in China, political protests in Japan, and landscapes around the world. Kansuke Yamamoto (1914-1987) became fascinated by the innovative approaches in art and literature exemplified by Western artists such as Man Ray and Magritte. He promoted Surrealist and avant-garde ideas in Japan through his poetry, paintings, sculptures, and photography.

This volume offers a superbly illustrated review of the work of renowned photographer Jo Ann Callis. An artist who has long exploited the emotional power of colour and texture, Jo Ann Callis is widely known for her inventive photographs involving tactile objects and images of people in mysterious, often unsettling narratives. "Jo Ann Callis" is a magnificently illustrated volume that accompanies the exhibition to be held at the J. Paul Getty Museum between March and August 2009, and constitutes the first full-length treatment of Callis' work - from 1974 to 2005 - for nearly twenty years. Featuring both new and familiar works, this volume attests to Callis' singular vision of the delicate boundary between the world within and the world without.
Milton Rogavin – The Mining Photographs
Born in New York in 1909, Milton Rogovin has been photographing coal miners since 1962, working first in Appalachia and later, in the 1980s, in Europe, Asia, South Africa, China, Mexico, and Cuba. Particularly in these later portraits he concentrated on the lives of miners as revealed at work and at home. Men and women portrayed at a mine entrance or in a changing room, covered in coal dust, are barely recognizable in the accompanying photographs, where they proudly stand in their living rooms or backyards, holding a pet or posing with their families, surrounded by their cherished belongings. "Milton Rogovin: The Mining Photographs" presents more than one hundred of these direct and powerful images, usually in pairings that reveal Rogovin's unsentimental regard for men and women whose dangerous work is shown to be only one part of their complex lives.
In Focus: Weegee – Photographs form the J.Paul Getty Museum
Stalking the streets of New York City at night alongside police detectives and barflies, the tough-talking, fedora-wearing, cigar-smoking photographer who called himself "Weegee" was ready at a moment's notice with his Speed Graphic to respond to the police radio. From the mid-1930s to 1950s he captured hundreds of pictures of accidents, murders, arrests, fires, and natural disasters, producing works that are both empathetic and sensational. This volume in the "In Focus" series presents approximately fifty of the ninety-five "Weegee" prints in the Getty's collection, surveying the photographer's probing vision of life in New York - from Harlem to Times Square, Greenwich Village, and the Bowery. Each of the photographs is accompanied by an introduction, a chronology, and commentary. The book also includes an edited transcript of a colloquium on Weegee's life and work that incorporates the author's comments along with those of seven other participants: David Featherstone, Michael Hargraves, Weston Naef, Miles Orvell, Ira Richer, Colin Westerbeck, and Cynthia Young. "In Focus: Weegee" is published to coincide with an exhibition of the photographer's work at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles from September 20, 2005, through January 22, 2006.

In Focus: Doris Ulmann – Photographs from the J. Paul Getty Museum
Doris Ulmann, one of the foremost photographers in the United States in the 1930s, disappeared from public awareness until the 1970s. She is best known for her quintessentially American pictures of the rural South. A prolific creator, she died before many of her last images could be printed. The latest addition to the acclaimed In Focus series present fifty-five pictures by Ulmann from the Museum's collection. Judith Keller, associate curator of photographs, wrote the extensive accompanying captions and participated, along with William Clift, David Featherstone, Charles Hagen, Weston Naef, Ron Pen, and Susan Millar Williams, in a colloquium on Ulmann and her work. The volume includes an edited transcript of their discussion and a chronological overview of Ulman's life.
