This book is written by a practicing engineer who is also a lawyer and an educator. Its goal is to help architects, engineers, and contractors understand their roles, rights, and responsibilities on construction projects.The book is also a useful reference for lawyers who advise clients in the construction industry or are engaged in resolving construction disputes. While the lawyers' role is to advocate for their clients, that advocacy should be guided by the expectations the parties set in their agreements along with the expectations that society has for professional practice. This book discusses many of those expectations.

From January 1980 through March 2017, my small engineering firm produced a monthly mailing with a calendar and a message or story. Sometimes the message was a case history; other times it was a bit of news or philosophy. Either way, we aimed to bring a smile, inspire some thought, and let people know what we had been doing. Of course, we also hoped the calendars reminded people about the engineering services we provide.
