Oe introduces Kogito Choko, a writer in his early sixties, as he rekindles a childhood friendship with his estranged brother-in-law, the renowned filmmaker Goro Hanawa. Goro sends Kogito a trunk of tapes he has recorded of reflections about their friendship, but as Kogito is listening one night, he hears something odd. "I'm going to head over to the Other Side now," Goro says, and then Kogito hears a loud thud. After a moment of silence, Goro's voice continues: "But don't worry, I'm not going to stop communicating with you." Moments later, Kogito's wife rushes in; Goro has jumped to his death. With that, Kogito begins a far-ranging search to understand what drove his brother-in-law to suicide. His quest takes him from the forests of southern Japan to the washed-out streets of Berlin, where Kogito confronts the ghosts from his own past and that of his lifelong, but departed, friend.

The Silent Cry follows two brothers who return to their ancestral home, a village in densely forested Western Japan. After decades of separation, the reunited men are each preoccupied by their own personal crises. One brother grapples with the recent suicide of his dearest friend, the birth of his disabled son, and his wife's increasing alcoholism. Soweit das Werk des Autors in deutscher Sprache nachzulesen ist, findet man bei ihm häufig diese Themenkomplexe wieder: die kleine überschaubare, durch die Zivilisation zutiefst verstörte Dorfwelt seiner Heimatinsel Shikoku; geistig behinderte Menschen (zumal Kinder); Angst vor Identitätsverlust (oder tatsächlich eingetretener Identitätsverlust); unüberbrückbare Gegensätze zwischen traditionell japanischen und amerikanischen Denk- und Verhaltensweisen. Diese Aspekte finden sich auch in diesen Erzählungen. Der Sündenbock handelt von einem japanischen Mediziner, dessen Diplome in Mexiko nicht anerkannt werden und der sich nur im sozialen Abseits durchschlagen kann.

Der Autor beschreibt die politische, industrielle und kulturelle Entwicklung Japans seit seiner Öffnung zum Westen im vergangenen Jahrhundert. Obwohl die Handlung zwischen den zwei rivalisierenden Brüdern Nedokoro in Japan spielt, ist der Leser auf detaillierte Kenntnisse über dies Land nicht angewiesen. Bei dem Roman handelt es sich um ein Stück neuester Weltliteratur. Henry Miller äußerte über ihn: ?Oe scheint mir, was seine Spannweite zwischen Hoffnung und Verzweiflung betrifft, Dostojewski ähnlich zu sein.? In seiner Kritik schrieb er über den Roman Der stumme Schrei: ?Das gewaltigste Werk von Japans erstem wahrhaft modernen Schriftsteller.?

In seinen Romanen, Erzählungen, Essays geht es immer um Ekel, Grausamkeit und vor allem und immer wieder um die moralische Labilität der Mitglieder der Nachkriegsgesellschaft. In der vorliegenden Erzählung fällt einem Romanistikstudenten und seiner Kollegin von der Anglistik eine besonders makabre Arbeit zu. In der Prosektur einer Universitätsklinik müssen sie Leichen aus einem Alkohol-Bassin in ein anderes umladen. (Die Studentin benötigt das Geld für die Kosten einer Schwangerschaftsunterbrechung - in Japan durchaus legal.) Nicht nur der Job ist widerwärtig, sondern auch der Auftraggeber, ein Medizinprofessor. Nach Beendigung der Arbeit erfahren die Werkstudenten, daß ihre Mühe vergeblich war. Die Leichen sollten gar nicht mehr zur Forschung oder Ausbildung verwendet, sondern im Krematorium verbrannt werden. Es bleibt ungewiß, ob ihnen ihr Arbeitslohn überhaupt ausbezahlt wird.
