Alle tekstene i det nye verket har gjennomgått en varsom språklig revisjon i retning av moderne riksmål. Dette er gjort for å skape enhet og konsekvens i ortografien slik at avstanden mellom verket og nåtidsleseren skal bli minst mulig og fornøyelsen ved å lese Hamsun desto større. Konsulent for det filologiske arbeidet har vært førsteamanuensis, ordboksredaktør Tor Guttu. Hamsun reviderte selv gjentatte ganger språket i de verk som kom med i de forskjellige utgaver av samlede. Riktignok var han ytterst energisk i sine påstander om at nettopp de endringer han der og da gjorde var de eneste forsvarlige og riktige - alt annet var unorsk og ren språkødeleggelse. Men samtidig var hans holdning hele tiden den at han ønsket å fornorske sitt språk. (Begrepet "fornorske" likte han for øvrig ikke - det lød etter hans oppfatning altfor tysk. Man skulle ikke "vernorske" språket. Det måtte hete "opnorske"). Omslagene til det nye verket er et kapittel for seg. Gyldendal har utfordret den internasjonalt kjente billedkunstneren Mari Slaattelid til å tolke Hamsuns tekster. Resultatet er blitt 27 unike bakgrunner. Aud Gloppen har ut fra disse laget et utsøkt bokdesign.

I «Segelfoss by» (1915) fortsetter Hamsun skildringen av den økonomiske og sosiale utvikling rundt det gamle Segelfoss gods, som han hadde påbegynt i «Barn av tiden» (1913). Industrivirksomhet fører til at urbaniseringstendensene skyter fart. Segelfoss utvikler seg til en småby med et skikt av småborgere: lege, sakfører og fotograf. Og foruten butikk får stedet også hotellvirksomhet, egen avis og et blomstrende foreningsliv, samt et voksende proletariat av tjenestepiker og arbeidere.

August kommer hjem til Polden, et stillestående, bortgjemt bygdesamfunn nordpå. Han er en gåtefull altmuligmann som har seilt på alle hav og har innsatte gulltenner, og som skaper liv og leven på det vesle stedet. Han setter i gang dristige og tvilsomme prosjekter, alt fra tobakksdyrking til sparebank. Men August har også dårlig innflytelse på andre, ikke minst på sin unge kamerat Edevart.
