Kurt Flasch

This volume collects Kurt Flasch's writings on Meister Eckhart, published between 1965 and 2022. It unfolds Flasch's philosophical life path via Eckhart and Dietrich von Freiberg, offering his investigations into the consistently and primarily philosophical intent of Meister Eckhart and several early works on Dietrich von Freiberg, written when Flasch was working on the four-volume edition of Dietrich's writings in 1977-1985. They present Dietrich's philosophy and demonstrate its epistemological value for the study of Eckhart without identifying the two colleagues, who, though friends, pursued distinct paths of thought. Other studies examine Eckhart's basic concepts: God, intellect, and image; they survey the new state of research and the impact of Eckhart's thought on the development of philosophy in Germany. Flasch analyzes Eckhart's thought philologically and philosophically-historically. This disturbed some friends of mysticism. Several studies therefore attempt to show that Eckhart's thought loses nothing by holding back the title "mystic" for a while. In addition, the volume presents a series of Eckhart's German sermons, which Flasch translates and explains. It concludes with some new work, most recently Flasch's "Preliminary Studies on Eckhart's Trials", written especially for this volume.

The fateful year 1933 has been and is still being extensively researched, but one can still make discoveries. For example, in the Catholic city of Munster, the group of prominent Catholic authors animated by Hitler's Vice-Chancellor Franz von Papen to make hesitant centrist voters move over to National Socialism. They were such prominent professors of theology as Michael Schmaus and Joseph Lortz. The Catholic writer Josef Pieper also assiduously made his voice heard. Their common aim was to "prove" what they believed to be the providential kinship of the Church and National Socialism. Kurt Flasch examines their reasoning and describes their historical position. It is not a matter of debunking or late denazification. The perpetrators who wrote are well known. They became most respected teachers in the early German Federal Republic; this makes them an element of post-1945 German continuity worth exploring.

Voltaire kept reading Pascal's "Pensees" throughout his life. He thoroughly perused them and made detailed notes in three stages from about 1728 until 1777. He let Pascal have his say. He prints detailed quotations and counters them with his criticism. Voltaire conducts a serious philosophical discussion with the author of the "Pensees" whom he recognizes as a genius. He calls it a battle of the giants. This has resulted in a document of great importance. It illuminates the intellectual, religious, and political landscape of the time like a flash of lightning: Voltaire considered Pascal's Christianity as archaic, implausible, hostile towards life. There is no clearer or more polished text on the relationship between Enlightenment and Christianity. At the same time, it is also a stylistic delight; two of the most original and witty writers in France are engaged here. Flasch's book presents the texts in translation and determines their historical and factual significance. It describes for the first time from the sources the emergence of the problem situation from the late Augustine to Jansenius, Pascal and Voltaire.

In this book Kurt Flasch describes and substantiates his way of thinking and working. He calls it "historical philosophy" and shows how it undercuts the separation of philosophical systematics and philosophical history, thus posing the problem of "historicism" in a new way. Flasch critically examines basic concepts such as "epoch," "tradition," and "continuity" and argues against dehistoricizing modes of appropriation of the past that ignore the time gap or reduce it to a mere external circumstance. He thus gains new insights into the relationship between the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Reformation.

English summary: The interest taken in the philosophy of Hans Blumenberg (1920-1996) is growing both in Germany and abroad. Yet it almost always focuses on the later Blumenberg. The reasons for the neglect of his early writings are easy to point out: they seek their way between Husserl and Heidegger in interpretations of texts of medieval philosophy, and the greater part of them remains unpublished to this day. This monograph by Kurt Flasch, one of Germany's most renowned experts on medieval philosophy and the history of philosophy, is based on archival studies and draws on lifelong source work on medieval philosophy and the early modern period. It reconstructs the philosophical development of Blumenberg from his earliest texts up to the discussion centered upon the Legitimitat der Neuzeit (1966). It philosophically and philologically discusses their lines of argumentation and juxtaposes them with the contemporaneous historical development of the German Federal Republic. It does not eschew criticism, but at the same time does not deny the author's personal empathy for his subject. Renowned philosopher Kurt Flasch offers a full-scale reappraisal of the life and legacy of Meister Eckhart, the medieval German theologian, philosopher, and alleged mystic who was active during the Avignon Papacy of the fourteenth century and was tried for heresy by Pope John XXII. Disputing his subject’s frequent characterization as a hero of a modern, syncretic spirituality, Flasch attempts to free Eckhart from the “Mystical Flood” by inviting his readers to think along with Eckhart in a careful rereading of his Latin and German works. Die Aeneas-Silvius-Vorlesung war 1960 das Geschenk der Basler Katholiken zum 500-Jahr-Jubilaum der Universitat Basel. Der gehaltene Vortrag stellt einen Brief, ein stilistisches Meisterwerk der humanistischen Theologie, von Papst Pius II. an den Sultan Mohamed II. im Jahre 1461 vor und ordnet ihn in den historischen Kontext ein.
