As soon as Anne Shirley arrives at the snug white farmhouse called Green Gables, she is sure she wants to stay forever . but will the Cuthberts send her back to to the orphanage? Anne knows she's not what they expected-a skinny girl with fiery red hair and a temper to match. If only she can convince them to let her stay, she'll try very hard not to keep rushing headlong into scrapes and blurting out the first thing that comes to her mind. Anne is not like anyone else, the Cuthberts agree she is special-a girl with an enormous imagination. This orphan girl dreams of the day when she can call herself Anne of Green Gables.Anne is described as bright and quick, eager to please, talkative, and extremely imaginative. She has a pale face with freckles and usually braids her red hair. When asked her name, Anne asks Marilla to call her Cordelia, which Marilla refuses Anne then insists that if she is to be called Anne, it must be spelled with an e, as that spelling is "so much more distinguished." Marilla at first says the girl must return to the orphanage, but after a few days she decides to let her stay. Marilla feels that she could be a good influence on the girl and had also overheard that another disagreeable woman in town might take Anne in instead. As a child of imagination, Anne takes much joy in life and adapts quickly, thriving in the close-knit farming village. Her talkativeness initially drives the prim, duty-driven Marilla to distraction, although Matthew falls for her charm immediately. Anne says that they are "kindred spirits." The book recounts Anne's adventures in making a home: the country school where she quickly excels in her studies her friendship with Diana Barry (her best or "bosom friend" as Anne fondly calls her) her budding literary ambitions and her rivalry with classmate Gilbert Blythe, who teases her about her red hair. For that he earns her instant hatred, although he apologizes many times. As time passes, Anne realizes she no longer hates Gilbert but cannot bring herself to admit it. However, by the end of the book they become friends. The book also follows Anne's adventures in quiet, old-fashioned Avonlea.

Bertha Marilla Blythe, also known as Rilla, is a teenager whose life dramatically changes with the onset and subsequent events of the first World War. She must quickly mature and adapt to a new normal, while awaiting the fate of her loved ones. Rilla Blythe is the bright young daughter of Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe. She’s a social butterfly who’s more interested in school dances than formal education. With the outbreak of World War I, Rilla’s forced to shift her priorities. Her brothers, childhood friends and first love all enlist in the service and are immediately sent abroad. Rilla attempts to do her part at home by collecting donations and supporting the Red Cross. During her efforts, she notices the dire effect the conflict has on families, particularly children. When she discovers an orphaned infant, Rilla is faced with new responsibilities that change her life forever. Rilla of Ingleside is one of the last books in the beloved Anne of Green Gables series. Despite its serious tone, the novel still maintains a message of hope and perseverance. Rilla is a vibrant character, who like her mother, chooses to forge her own path. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Rilla of Ingleside is both modern and readable.

Anne of Green Gables' tells the tale of a little red headed orphaned girl, mistakenly sent to the Cutherbert's farm on Prince Edward Island. Anne's strong character and vivid imaginaton both help and hinder her as she makes her way through childhood in the pretty little town of Avonlea. This early work by Lucy Maud Montgomery was originally published in 1908 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. Lucy Maud Montgomery was born on 30th November 1874, New London, in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island. Her mother, Clara Woolner (Macneil), died before Lucy reached the age of two and so she was raised by her maternal grandparents in a family of wealthy Scottish immigrants. In 1908 Montgomery produced her first full-length novel, titled 'Anne of Green Gables'. It was an instant success, and following it up with several sequels, Montgomery became a regular on the best-seller list and an international household name. Montgomery died in Toronto on 24th April 1942.

The all-time classic story about Anne, an orphan adopted into a Nova Scotian family, is presented here complete to readers. Although Anne's adoptive family - who originally wanted to adopt a boy - are initially apprehensive of the girl who arrives instead, they soon find her keen imagination and lively manner agreeable, and allow her to stay. Bright, chatty and curious, Anne quickly takes to exploring the lands and village around the family homestead; the titular Green Gables. The book follows Anne and the family as the girl grows older, embarking on various endeavours and calling her adoptive parents 'kindred spirits'. In particular, the girl shines for her academic abilities and quick witted perception, but is also very sensitive, particularly about her red hair, which she habitually braids.
