An updated and enhanced version of the popular NSTA Press book Understanding Climate Change, this practical curriculum allows you to engage your students in understanding one of the most key topics in science education. The ten-session unit provides extensive background information and step-by-step instructions for teaching this topic effectively within your existing curriculum. Each session uses three-dimensional methods to cover a different area of climate science, global warming, and environmental change. The authors include scaffolding suggestions, alignment with Next Generation Science Standards, and guidance on best practices for teaching this complex topic as either a four-week standalone unit or within your other chemistry, biology, or environmental science lessons. This update includes interviews with current "climate change agents," sharing stories of their work, career pathways, and what gives them hope for the future. Together the sessions provide a strong foundation for understanding the science behind the greenhouse effect and climate change. It encourages your students to conduct their own scientific research, develop conclusions, discuss ripple effects, and examine solutions leading to actions students can take on their own or as a group. Ideal for middle and high school science teachers both new and veteran, this field-tested unit helps you engage your students in climate change learning while providing them with a hopeful outlook for their future.

"A dazzling debut novel about resilience, courage, home and family."--Rebecca Stead, Newbery Award-winning author of When You Reach Me SoHo, 1981. Twelve-year-old Olympia is an artist--and in her neighborhood, that's normal. Her dad and his business partner Apollo bring antique paintings back to life, while her mother makes intricate sculptures in a corner of their loft, leaving Ollie to roam the streets of New York with her best friends Richard and Alex, drawing everything that catches her eye. Then everything falls apart. Ollie's dad disappears in the middle of the night, leaving her only a cryptic note and instructions to destroy it. Her mom has gone to bed, and she's not getting up. Apollo is hiding something, Alex is acting strange, and Richard has questions about the mysterious stranger he saw outside. And someone keeps calling, looking for a missing piece of art. . . Olympia knows her dad is the key--but first, she has to find him, and time is running out.

Get help teaching one of the hottest topics in science with Understanding Climate Change, Grades 7–12. This nine-session module is written to be practical and accessible. It provides both extensive background and step-by-step instructions for using three-dimensional methods to explore this complex subject. It fits easily into a middle or high school curriculum while supporting the Next Generation Science Standards. The material can be covered in just three or four weeks or used in part to supplement your existing curriculum. Best of all, your students will find the module truly engaging. Rather than spoon-feeding them information, the lessons spur them to investigate evidence of climate change and global warming for themselves. Understanding Climate Change is designed with the Learning Cycle and the BSCS 5E Instructional Model in mind. The module starts with an in-depth look at sources of CO2 (carbon dioxide) and the greenhouse effect. It then addresses misconceptions about climate change; in fact, an entire session is devoted to evaluating information to see if it’s accurate, verifiable, complete, and from a reputable source. Then the lessons prompt students to conduct their own scientific research, discuss ripple effects, and examine solutions. The authors deliberately structured this module to build a conceptual foundation without risking information overload. Your students will come away prepared to analyze what they hear about climate change outside of class. They’ll also be ready to use critical thinking skills to draw their own conclusions about what should be done and to come up with ways they can take action to mitigate the effects of climate change in their homes, schools, and communities.
Standing Tall

Standing Tall

C. Vivian Stringer; Laura Tucker

"Lots of people have dreams, but C. Vivian Stringer is the dream--a coalminer's daughter who believed when her Poppa told her there was no obstacle she could not surmount. And she lives that dream, teaching others to rise up to meet challenges, turning underdogs into champions again and again--on and off the court. This is the quintessential American story, of a woman and of a family pulling together against the odds. Standing Tall offers an important message of hope to so many." --John Chaney, Hall of Fame college basketball coach At a time when heroes are too rare, C. Vivian Stringer sets a shining example. She has time and again shown character, fortitude, and heart, both on and off the hardwood, and in the face of unbearable loss. In Standing Tall, she shares her remarkable life story, inspiring us to find this fortitude within ourselves. "Work hard, and don't look for excuses," Stringer's parents told her, "and you can achieve anything." But her faith and perseverance would be tested many times. A gifted athlete, she had to fight for a place on an all-white cheerleading squad in the sixties. In 1981, just as her coaching career was taking off, her fourteen-month-old daughter, Nina, was stricken with spinal meningitis. Nina would never walk or talk again. Still grieving, Stringer brought a small, poor, historically black college to the national championships--a triumph hailed as "Hoosiers with an all-female cast." In 1991, her husband, Bill--her staunchest supporter, the father of her children, and the love of her life--fell dead of a sudden heart attack, but that same year, she led yet another young team to the Final Four. Through these dark times and others--including her bout with cancer, shared here for the first time--Stringer has carried her burdens with grace. Given her history, it was no surprise that she led her team to respond to Don Imus's slurs with dignity and courage. Standing Tall is a story of quiet strength in the face of punishing odds. Above all, it is an extraordinary love story--love for the game, for the players she has coached, for her close-knit family, and for the husband she lost far too soon. It will resonate long after the last page.
