Leena Pietilä-Castrén

The Pompeii Project of the University of Helsinki (Expeditio Pompeiana Universitatis Helsingiensis, EPUH), first directed by Paavo Castrén (2002-2009) and then by Antero Tammisto (2009-), has as its goal the documentation, analysis, and publishing of all the structural and material remains, wall paintings, and finds of a single Pompeian city block, Insula IX 3. This volume is dedicated to the exceptionally rich finds of its largest unit, the House of Marcus Lucretius (IX3,5.24).

The goal of this study is to produce an overview of ancient terracotta figurines in Finland, and make them accessible to those interested in classical archaeology and ancient culture. The methods utilized in this study were as follows. After locating the terracottas and recording the appropriate data for each piece, the diverse body of material was classified by subject, without making a division by possible geographical area of origin. Catalogue entries are confined to technical information and lists of closely related types. At least one photo is provided for each item. The second section of this study deals with the collectors. A short biography is provided for each of them.
