Viruses running rampant. Families in quarantine. Health officials worried and looking for treatments. City streets in poor condition. High unemployment. Wages going down and prices going up. Congress at a standstill. Cities awash in racial violence.2020?No... it was 1921.Revisit Ottumwa, Iowa and the nation one hundred years ago through the pages of The Ottumwa Daily News
Welcome to Ottumwa 1896: Second Regiment Encampment Iowa National Guard
In 1896, Company G of the Second Regiment of the Iowa National Guard hosted the regiment's annual encampment in its home town. The Ottumwa Daily Democrat newspaper produced a souvenir book for visiting guardsmen -- including information about the regiment and the town. Much of this information appears nowhere else. Only a few copies survived. This edition has been produced by restoring a badly-damaged original. Company G went on to serve in the Spanish-American War and in World War I where it was a part of the famed Rainbow Division.
Much ADO about Shakespeare: An Introduction to the Authorship Question
Who wrote the plays and poems credited to William Shakespeare?Though professors and English teachers would have you believe the matter is settled and the author of Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet and Much Ado about Nothing has long since been identified, that is far from true. There are good reasons to doubt that the man who was born and died in Stratford-upon-Avon was ever any kind of writer, much less the most honored author in the English language. As time goes on, the number of doubters - including authors, actors, attorneys, doctors, judges, university professors, and scholars of English literature - continues to grow, as does the list of books documenting the many reasons for doubt. While the major books on the authorship question are excellent, they're mostly big (often running upwards of 500 pages) and often densely written in order to fit in all the details. It's a major commitment of time to thoroughly absorb the books, so it's easier for readers who aren't already doubters to pass by rather than dive into the literature to find out more. MUCH ADO ABOUT SHAKESPEARE is a quick introduction to the authorship question. If you've heard that there's a squabble about who Shakespeare really was, but you don't know much about it - or if you've simply wondered what all the fuss is about - this 10,000-word summary is a good starting place. This is not intended as a scholarly work. The aim of the book is to present the basic information and encourage a reader to inquire further.

Businesses pay for advertisements to inform consumers and persuade them to buy products - but years later, those same advertisements are like a time capsule of a community. Ads show how a business develops, how commerce changes, and how the economy waxes and wanes as years go by. The ads reproduced in this book were originally published in city directories listing residents and businesses in Ottumwa, Iowa, and show the development of a community through 90 years of advertising.

Though early settlement in Iowa followed the rivers, it was the advent of the railroads, starting in the late 1850s, which opened up the remainderof the state for development -- bringing goods to residents and sending their crops and products out to the world. Railroads formed the backbone of middle America, with dozens of trains -- freight and passenger -- reaching out to nearly every small town in the region. This collection of photographs from the 1800s to the present day celebrates the railroads and railroaders of southeast Iowa.
