In the late 1880s, Leo Tolstoy began compiling material for a collection of quotations that he deemed to reflect the wisdom of the centuries. His goal was to create a circle of reading for himself and others that included such thought leaders as Lau Tzu, Marcus Aurelius, Buddha, Jesus, and many others. Between 1904 and 1910 he published three different versions of this work under the titles Thoughts of Wise Men, A Calendar of Wisdom, and The Way of Life. A 1912 edition of A Calendar of Wisdom was translated into English and published in 1997 and has sold over 40,000 copies to date. But Tolstoy himself was a wise man, and has shared much knowledge through his many writings over the years. In this book, editor Bob Blaisdell has collected material that represents Tolstoy's inspirational thoughts over the years that reveal a man who at times contradicts himself, and one who was also tirelessly seeking truth and the meaning of life. Topics range from self-improvement, education, marriage and family, good and evil, peace, war, and civil disobedience, with quotations from diaries, letters, fiction, essays, and conversations. This original collection reflects on a man of a certain time and place, and yet contains wisdom and food for thought for literature lovers and lay people alike.
Around the age of fifty, Tolstoy began to experience profound moments of confusion, as if he no longer knew how to go on living or what his purpose was. Things that had always seemed self-evidently meaningful now appeared hollow. The questions "Why?" and "What next?" began to haunt him with increasing frequency. A Confession is Tolstoy's deeply personal story of the his struggle with this midlife existential crisis. Written after the peak of his literary success, Tolstoy grapples with profound questions about life, death, and faith. It details his search for an answer to the ultimate philosophical question: If God does not exist, and death is inevitable, what is the meaning of life? Tolstoy explores four possible attitudes toward this dilemma, each of which has some merit but which he deems unsatisfactory or unsuitable. After careful examination, he turns to a mystical, intuitive affirmation of God's presence-a revelation that fills his life with new meaning and ultimately leads him toward a new understanding of spirituality and morality. This Warbler Classics edition includes Tolstoy's essays "Religion and Morality" and "Church and State," a new introduction that contextualizes his search for truth, and suggestions for further reading.
Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (1828-1910) commonly referred to in English as Leo Tolstoy, was a Russian writer - novelist, essayist, dramatist and philosopher - as well as pacifist Christian anarchist and educational reformer. He was the most influential member of the aristocratic Tolstoy family. His first publications were three autobiographical novels, Childhood, Boyhood, and Youth (1852-1856). They tell of a rich landowner's son and his slow realization of the differences between him and his peasants. As a fiction writer Tolstoy is widely regarded as one of the greatest of all novelists, particularly noted for his masterpieces War and Peace (1869) and Anna Karenina (1877). In their scope, breadth and realistic depiction of 19th-century Russian life, the two books stand at the peak of realist fiction.
