Lewis Carroll (the pen name of Charles Dodgson) was inspired to write down the now classic tale of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" after regaling several young children with it while on an outing. Not long after, the book was published with 42 illustrations by John Tenniel. While it wasn't an immediate success, it has since become a favorite of young people over the generations. It has been released in various other forms since then, with Hollywood taking several cracks at it. But wouldn't you like to read it almost exactly how it was first release? We all know how movies alter books somewhat, and sometimes they make the original book unrecognizable. Here is your chance to read the book as Carroll intended it to be read This edition is derived from an 1869 reprint of the original 1865 text, making it almost as close as you can get to the original Imagine sitting down with your children or grandchildren and reading this classic almost exactly as it would have been read more than one hundred years ago. Dodgson was prompted by his friend, George MacDonald (another famous author of the 1800s), to publish this book. Read it yourself, to find out why

On a beautiful summer day, little Alice is sitting under a tree and is bored. Suddenly, a white rabbit runs by. Excited, the little animal pulls a watch out of its vest pocket and mumbles to itself that it is probably too late now. Alice jumps up curiously, because she has never seen a rabbit wearing a vest and carrying a watch. Alice runs after the animal until it disappears into a hole in the ground. Curious, the girl also squeezes into the burrow and falls through a long shaft.... Alice in Wonderland from 1865 is considered the most successful British children's book - still ahead of Harry Potter. The book illuminates a world in which a child must make her way through life alone, far away from all educational norms. Gr ls Classics - English Edition

Behind the Mirrors. An Alice in Wonderland - Adventure: After the great success of his book Alice in Wonderland, published in 1865, Lewis Carroll decided to write a sequel. Where Carroll used playing cards as a motif for Alice in Wonderland, he now uses chess. Most of the characters Alice meets are chess pieces, and she herself moves as a pawn across the huge chessboard. Alice must reach the eighth square to be crowned queen. Sylvie and Bruno (1889) is a novel by Lewis Carroll. Originally conceived as a pair of short stories published in Aunt Judy’s Magazine in 1867, Sylvie and Bruno eventually became a full length, two-volume novel. Although less popular than his Alice books, the novel remains a powerful example of Carroll’s imaginative range and ability to capture the surreal nature of everyday life. “The Warden, a tall dignified man with a grave but very pleasant face, was seated before a writing-table, which was covered with papers, and holding on his knee one of the sweetest and loveliest little maidens it has ever been my lot to see. She looked four or five years older than Bruno, but she had the same rosy cheeks and sparkling eyes, and the same wealth of curly brown hair.” While traveling by train to a long-overdue doctor’s appointment, a middle-aged historian slips in and out of sleep. Each time, he enters a dream world where fairies and elves go about their lives without noticing his presence. Gradually, he becomes aware of a plot to overthrow the Warden orchestrated by Sub-Warden Sibimet and his wife Tabikat. Tricked into giving the Sub-Warden dictatorial powers, the Warden embarks to serve as Monarch of Fairyland. Soon, a Mad Gardener arrives and directs Sylvie and Bruno to follow him to a bizarre underground lair. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Lewis Carroll’s Sylvie and Bruno is a classic work of English literature reimagined for modern readers.

Although less popular than his Alice books, the novel remains a powerful example of Carroll’s imaginative range and ability to capture the surreal nature of everyday life. “I missed the pleasant friends I had left behind at Elveston […] but, perhaps more than all, I missed the companionship of the two Fairies—or Dream-Children, for I had not yet solved the problem as to who or what they were—whose sweet playfulness had shed a magic radiance over my life.” While traveling by train to a long-overdue doctor’s appointment, a middle-aged historian slips in and out of sleep. Each time, he enters a dream world where fairies and elves go about their lives without noticing his presence. Gradually, he begins to interact with the figures in his dreams and feels strangely attached to the young Sylvie and Bruno. In the waking world, his best friend Dr. Arthur Forester risks his life in order to care for the sick in a village undergoing a deadly fever outbreak. The story centres on Alice, a young girl who falls asleep in a meadow and dreams that she follows a White Rabbit down a rabbit hole. She has many wondrous, often bizarre adventures with thoroughly illogical and very strange creatures. Often changing size unexpectedly (she grows as tall as a house and shrinks to three inches), Alice encounters such characters as the March Hare, the Cheshire Cat, the Duchess, the Mad Hatter, the Mock Turtle, and the Red Queen. Alice drinks potions and eats cakes and toadstools to change size, attends a bizarre endless teaparty, plays a game of croquet with an unmanageable flamingo for a croquet mallet and is a witness at the trial of the knave of hearts, where she risks the queen shouting "Off with her head ."
