Peak Performance Psychology for Endurance Athletes
Increasingly across the globe, coaches and athletes are coming to a key realisation: in the battle for podium placings in major competitions, where as a ‘ticket of admission’ event finalists have very similar physiological profiles, the ‘difference that really makes the difference’ between medalling and being an also-ran is psychological preparation. The progressively unrelenting urge to slow down and stop needs effective counter-strategies. Peak Performance Psychology for Endurance Athletes is unique in pulling fundamental theory and science-based practice together in a new multidisciplinary psycho-physiological model: The Performance Space. Building on four theories; Self-Efficacy, Revised Reinforcement Sensitivity, Theory of Challenge and Threat States in Athletes, and the Psychobiological Model of Endurance, this model aids skilful navigation through the seemingly complex interaction between Personality, Psychological Skills, Emotional Regulation and Self-Monitoring. The end-result being practical and easily incorporated ways to elicit high performance states and behaviours that can be maintained from event beginning to end. Key highlights include: Turning Threat into Challenge, Building Belief, Using Imagery, Self-talk and Goal Pursuit in a Unified Process, Ideal Performance States, Staying on Track, Developing Resilience, as well as presenting numerous athlete examples to bring the model to life for easy assimilation. Written for Performance Psychologists, Coaches, Elite and Recreational Athletes, this is a go-to-text for tools that can be integrated into all aspects of training and racing.

Black Eden

"Black Eden" chronicles the history of Idlewild, one of the many American black communities founded during the aftermath of the Civil War. As Michigan's most popular black resort, Idlewild functioned as a gathering place for African Americans and, more important, as a touchstone of black identity and culture. Benjamin C. Wilson and Lewis Walker examine Idlewild's significance within a historical context, as well as the town's revitalization efforts and the need for comprehensive planning in future development. In a segregated America, Idlewild became a place where black audiences could see rising black entertainers. Profusely illustrated with photos from the authors' personal collections, "Black Eden" provides a lengthy discussion about the crucial role that Idlewild played in the careers of such artists as Louis Armstrong, B. B. King, Sammy Davis Jr., Jackie Wilson, Aretha Franklin, and Della Reese. Fundamentally, the book explores issues involved in living in a segregated society, and the consequences of the civil rights movement, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and subsequent integration, and integration vs. racial solidarity. The authors ask: "Did integration kill Idlewild?" but suggest that other factors contributed to its decline.

This extraordinary and practical book examines neuro linguistic programming (NLP) - the knowledge and skills to detect and affect thinking patterns - and applies it to each phase of the medical consultation. It outlines the NLP tools most useful to physicians who wish to understand and utilise the dynamic structure underlying the processes used by excellent communicators. It explains how improving communication skills and developing new models of consultation to incorporate into daily practice not only helps healthcare professionals become better communicators, but reassures patients, alleviating suffering and promoting healing. This book provides many case examples and includes skill based exercises to ensure easy and effective learning. There are unique, fresh perspectives on challenging areas such as anger and aggression, dealing with complaints, breaking bad news, the heartsink patient, uncovering hidden depression and telephone consulting skills. It is relevant to all healthcare professionals, and of special interest to general practitioners, GP trainers, counsellors and medical students.
