Stumbling Blocks and Other Unfinished Work

Stumbling Blocks and Other Unfinished Work

Delores Phillips; Linda Miller; Trudier Harris

Stumbling Blocks expands and contextualizes the unpublished works of the late African American writer Delores Phillips. Born in Cartersville, Georgia in 1950, Delores Faye Phillips spent much of her childhood in Georgia before moving to Cleveland, Ohio. Best known for her 2004 novel The Darkest Child, which follows the Quinn family as they attempt to survive and escape racism, lynchings, and poverty in Jim Crow Georgia during the 1950s, Phillips wrote much more than that. While the novel was met with critical acclaim, little is known about Phillips herself or about her other writings. Indeed, in the 2018 reissue of The Darkest Child, Tayari Jones remarks in the introduction that when she heard Phillips had passed away in 2014, she was “weighted down with longing for the other books that she would never write.” This volume, then, corrects the misconception that The Darkest Child was Phillips’s only published work. Rather, it establishes her as an experienced and prolific writer who created multi-genre literature throughout her life. It paints a broader picture of Phillips, who was not just a novelist but also a poet and short story writer as well. Just as Alice Walker’s recovery work on Zora Neale Hurston in the 1970s was critical to a revival and appreciation of Hurston as “a genius of the South,” Stumbling Blocks illuminates and expands the legacy of an underrepresented writer who is uniquely situated at the intersections of multiple identities including race, gender, disability, and region. In addition to the sequel to The Darkest Child, this collection also includes an unfinished third novel (No Ordinary Rain), ten poems, seven short stories, contextualizing essays, and an in-depth biography of Phillips. It is also bookended by a foreword from Phillips’s sister, Linda Miller, and an afterword from renowned literary scholar Trudier Harris.

With a strong focus on problem solving and community-police partnerships, this comprehensive text provides a practical, up-to-date guide to effective community policing. After an introduction to the history and philosophy of the movement that has profoundly shaped modern police operations, the authors emphasize practical strategies and essential skills to help readers apply effective, real-world problem solving within their communities. In light of recent high-profile deadly force incidents that have strained the relationships between the community and the police, the eighth edition taps into the recommendations in the Final Report of the President's Task Force on 21st Century Policing and its call for a renewed emphasis on community policing to strengthen public trust and build police legitimacy. And the MindTap that accompanies this text helps you master techniques and key concepts while engaging you with career-based decision-making scenarios, visual summaries, and more.

Practical Behaviour Management Solutions for Children and Teens with Autism
Children and young people with autistic spectrum disorders present many challenges to the people who care for them. 'Difficult' or challenging behaviour is often encountered on a daily basis, and it is easy for both parents and professionals to feel completely overwhelmed by its sheer range and complexity. Where do you start? What happens when, in managing one set of problems, another gets worse? Is there some way to tackle difficulties before they get out of hand, or even before they arise? Practical Behaviour Management Solutions for Children and Teens with Autism answers these questions and provides practical solutions that really work. It offers a complete framework for behaviour intervention which has its roots in prevention and good practice, with an emphasis on promoting and encouraging the development of skills and independence, through Profiling, Prioritizing, Problem analysis, Problem solving and Planning. From identifying behaviour and understanding the root causes, through to planning and implementing a comprehensive intervention programme, this book is packed with practical strategies and expert guidance. While clearly defining the steps you need to take, it also allows for flexibility according to need and individual contexts. Designed specifically for parents and teachers, and complete with photocopiable tools, this book will provide structured yet flexible guidance for all parents and professionals supporting a child or young person on the autism spectrum.
