This book provides interpretation of China’s logistics development in a new development paradigm and the rural logistics construction under the Rural Revitalization Strategy. Subjects covered in this book encompass the macro-factors pertaining to the overall development in logistics technologies and facilities, region-specific policies and plans, industry-wide transformation in transport, manufacturing, commerce and agriculture. Specifically, this book highlights the impact of COVID-19 on China’s logistics industry, and demonstrates the efforts and contributions of China’s logistics in the fight against COVID-19 in 2020. Aligns with the previous volumes, the ultimate aim of this book is to present a timely portrait of the rapid growth of China’s logistics market and the status quo of its logistics industry. In so doing, the book offers an in-depth analysis of critical issues involved in the ongoing dynamic and multi-faceted development and provides a valuable reference resource forinterested readers in the academic and professional fields.

Mineral material science is a new emerging comprehensive interdisciplinary discipline born in China. Over the past 40 years, Chinese scientific and technological workers have carried out a great deal of research work, which has had a deeper understanding of this discipline. This book discusses the fundamentals and practical applications of mineral material science, as well as future outlook of mineral functional materials. It will be a one-stop manual of mineral material science, and will be useful to researchers, scholars, practitioners and students in the field of mineral material science.
Voice over IP Networks

Voice over IP Networks

This book addresses three important issues in VoIP networks: Quality of Service, pricing and security. In addressing Quality of Service (QoS), it introduces the notion of delay not exceeding an upper limit, termed the bounded delay, to measure the Quality of Service in VoIP networks. Queuing models are introduced to measure performance in terms of bounded delays. Closed form solutions relating the impact of bounding delays on throughput of VoIP traffic are provided. Traffic that exceeds the delay threshold is treated as lost throughput. The results addressed can be used in scaling resources in a VoIP network for different thresholds of acceptable delays. Both single and multiple switching points are addressed. The same notion and analysis are also applied on jitter, another important indicator of the VoIP QoS This book also develops a pricing model based on the Quality of Service provided in VoIP networks. It presents the impact of quality of VoIP service demanded by the customer on the transmission resources required by the network using an analytical approach. In addition, it extends and applies the delay throughput analysis developed for VoIP networks in assessing the impact of risks constituted by a number of transportation channels, where the risk associated with each channel can be quantified by a known distribution. Finally, the book explores areas for future research that can be built on the foundation of research presented.

Heavenly Clockwork

Heavenly Clockwork

A reissue with a foreword and supplement, of a modern classic published in 1960. The invention of the mechanical clock was one of the most important turning points in the history of science and technology. This study revealed six centuries of mechanical clockwork preceding the first mechanical escapement clocks of the West of about AD 1300. Detailed and fully illustrated accounts of elaborate Chinese clocks are accompanied by a discussion of the social context of the Chinese inventions and an assessment of their possible transmission to medieval Europe. For this revised edition, Dr Joseph Needham has contributed a new foreword on recent research and perceptions. In a supplement John H. Combridge details a modern reconstruction of Su Sung's timekeeping device, which together with textual studies modifies our understanding of this important early technology.
