To what degree is the suicide trend in the U.S. Army unique to that service, relative to what is observed in the general U.S. population? Researchers investigate how accounting for additional population risk factors beyond age and gender (race/ethnicity, time, marital status, and educational attainment) affects suicide rate differences between soldiers and a comparable subset of the general U.S. population.

This study compares the behavioral health of racial/ethnic minority, women, and sexual minority service members to their majority group peers and examines minority-majority group differences in the military versus civilian population. Understanding whether minority group service members experience differences in behavioral health can assist the Department of Defense in targeting its efforts to improve force readiness.

In this report, RAND researchers describe the Partnerships for Social and Emotional Learning Initiative-which is an effort to explore whether and how children benefit when schools and out-of-school time programs partner to improve and align social and emotional learning-as well as what it takes to do this work. The researchers report findings and early lessons from the first two years of implementation in the six participating communities.

CBITS was developed for use by school-based mental health professionals for any student with symptoms of distress following exposure to trauma. SSET was adapted from CBITS for use by any school personnel with the time and interest to work with students affected by trauma. This toolkit assists social workers, school-based mental health professionals, and school personnel in adapting these interventions for use with youth who are in foster care.

This book summarizes key findings and recommendations from "Invisible Wounds of War: Psychological and Cognitive Injuries, Their Consequences, and Services to Assist Recovery" (Tanielian and Jaycox [Eds.], MG-720-CCF, 2008), a comprehensive study of the post-deployment health-related needs associated with post-traumatic stress disorder, major depression, and traumatic brain injury among veterans of Operations Enduring Freedom/Iraqi Freedom.

This tool kit describes how trauma exposure impacts students' performance and behavior and provides a compendium of programs for schools to support the long-term recovery of traumatized students. It also compares the programs with one another.

Military OneSource operates a call center that provides resources and referrals for military personnel and their families. In this report, the authors evaluate call quality, call outcomes, and caller satisfaction, finding that calls were rated of high quality and that interviewees reported satisfaction with their experience with the service. The authors provide recommendations for operations and identify areas for future study.

To assist the U.S. Marine Corps in evaluating its sexual assault prevention programs, the authors of this report identify and develop measures of performance and measures of effectiveness with which to assess the programs. The research team created a logic model framework to guide evaluations and mapped program goals to measures that assess the degree to which each outcome has been achieved.

The Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools (CBITS) program is designed to help students exposed to traumatic events who are suffering from emotional or behavioral problems. CBITS focuses on three goals: decreasing current symptoms related to trauma exposure, building skills for handling stress and anxiety, and building peer and caregiver support. This new edition provides updates based on two decades of field experience.

Creating Healing School Communities provides readers with the necessary amp ldquo trauma-informed amp rdquo tools to intervene on behalf of struggling students and create a beneficial educational environment. School systems are pressured to raise the level of academic achievement, but children who are exposed to trauma often bring a complicated set of needs to the classroom that can impact their willingness to learn, their cognitive function, their ability to form lasting relationships, and even their physical health. For school mental health providers, it can be overwhelming to find the best ways to support students who have experienced trauma and stress: What are the best ways to, understand and assist these vulnerable children? School-based programs can minimize the impact trauma has on learning and help students who may otherwise not have access to such support to develop the coping skills to manage ongoing and future stress. With examples of core treatment components and engaging case studies, this book illustrates how effective school-based interventions ensure that students have the opportunity to heal from trauma. The authors take a holistic approach to trauma-informed practices, and provide a practical overview of evidence-based interventions using the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) model. Under the MTSS, trauma interventions take place on three distinct levels that address a wide variety of students and differing degrees of trauma exposure: Universal (Tier ), Targeted (Tier 2), and Intensive (Tier 3). This report presents an independent implementation evaluation of the Re-Engineering Systems of Primary Care Treatment in the Military (RESPECT-Mil) Program, a system of care designed to screen, assess, and treat PTSD and depression among active duty service members in Army primary care settings. Analyses were based on existing program data used to monitor fidelity across clinics, as well as discussions with key stakeholders.

This is a comprehensive study of the post-deployment health-related needs associated with post-traumatic stress disorder, major depression, and traumatic brain injury among servicemembers returning from Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, the health care system in place to meet those needs, gaps in the care system, and the costs associated with these conditions and with providing quality health care to all those in need.
