At a time when the Romantic movement was sweeping the European continent in the early 19th century, among musicians, writers and playwrights, perhaps nobody embodied and personified the Romantic movement quite like Lord Byron, the famous English poet whose life and works are both the stuff of legend. In addition to being celebrated for poems like She Walks in Beauty, When We Two Parted, and So, we'll go no more a roving, Byron was also notorious for living in excess, racking up debts and liaisons at increasingly reckless speeds. Despite his fame and abilities, he eventually exiled himself, ultimately traveling to fight in the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Turks. Lord Byron would fall ill and die during the war at the young age of 36, but the Greeks consider him a national hero, and people have been reading his material and talking about his life ever since. Manfred was written between 1816 and 1817, and was described by Bryon as a "metaphysical drama".

Lord George Gordon Byron was the flamboyant aristocratic poet who is as renowned for his personal life as he is for his poetry. The victim of an untimely death, Lord Byron lived from 1788 to 1824. Despite this relatively short life he still managed to create a volume of poetry that achieved him the status as one of the greatest of all English poets. This representative selection includes such classics as "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage," a sweeping narrative poem which relays the story of a world-weary young man who abandons a life of pleasure for distraction in foreign lands, and a selection from "Don Juan," generally considered by critics as Byron's masterpiece, which tells the legend of Don Juan as a man who is easily seduced by women instead of the more common womanizing portrayal. A leading figure of the Romantic movement, Lord Byron's poetry is still widely read and admired to this day. Fans of English Romantic poetry would be remiss in skipping this fine collection of over one hundred of Byron's classic poetic works. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

With an Introduction, Bibliography and Glossary by Dr Paul Wright, Trinity College, Carmarthen. 'I mean to show things really as they are, not as they ought to be'. wrote Byron (1788-1824) in his comic masterpiece Don Juan, which follows the adventures of the hero across the Europe and near East which Byron knew so well, touching on the major political, cultural and social concerns of the day. This selection includes all of that poem, and selections from Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, and the satirical poems 'English Bards and Scotch Reviewers' and 'A Vision of Judgement'. Paul Wright's detailed introductions place Byron's colourful life and work within their broader social and political contexts, and demonstrate that Byron both fostered and critiqued the notorious 'Byronic myth' of heroic adventure, political action and sexual scandal.

In Lord Byron's lifetime, details of his travels were widely known through poems set in different countries, ranging from his homes in Scotland and England, through Europe and the Middle East, to the South Pacific and into extra-terrestrial realms. At the same time, a much more personal story was being shared with friends and family. Even when divided from those whose company he most enjoyed, Byron continued to share his thoughts and feelings about wherever he happened to be. His compulsive letter-writing reveals a strong desire to reach across space, to connect and reconnect with those elsewhere. While his memoirs did not survive the ceremonial posthumous bonfire at 50 Albemarle Street, many of Byron's correspondents treasured every word in their possession. This means a remarkable legacy has been preserved in letters that still seem as alive with conversational energy as when they were dashed off more than two hundred years ago. Through Byron's letters and journals, we are still able to become mental travellers, transported across time and space by this brilliant, mercurial, magnificent and often maddening writer.

"Don Juan" is an epic poem written by Lord Byron, published in several parts between 1819 and 1824. The poem is a satirical take on the legendary figure of Don Juan, a seductive and promiscuous character from Spanish literature. Byron's "Don Juan" follows the adventures of the titular character as he travels across Europe and encounters a variety of characters, including nobles, poets, and politicians. The poem is notable for its witty and often irreverent tone, as well as its exploration of themes like love, sex, politics, and religion. Throughout the poem, Byron pokes fun at the conventions of romance and chivalry, and portrays Don Juan as a figure who is at once charming and flawed. Despite his many dalliances, Don Juan is often shown as a sympathetic and likeable character, who is capable of genuine feeling and emotion.

Long narrative poem "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage" by famed English poet Lord Byron. The poem, which was written in four cantos and was published between 1812 and 1818, recounts the exploits and introspections of Childe Harold, its main character. As Childe Harold travels through many European nations, including Portugal, Spain, Greece, and Italy, the poem assumes the shape of a travelogue. Childe Harold ponders issues of disappointment, alienation, the fleeting nature of life, and the pursuit of purpose and happiness via his observations and ideas. Byron's poem is rich with evocative descriptions of the geographical settings, historical sites, and social and political environments of the places he traveled. His use of vivid images, intense feelings, and an acute sense of reflection are what define his poetry style. In addition to establishing Byron as a major character in Romantic literature, "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage" helped to shape the genre of the poetic travelogue. The poem is a notable piece in the canon of English literature because of its investigation of both individual and social concerns, expressive language, and striking imagery.

Don Juan is a satiric poem by Lord Byron, based on the legend of Don Juan, which Byron reverses, portraying Juan not as a womanizer but as someone easily seduced by women. It is a variation on the epic form. Byron himself called it an "Epic Satire" (Don Juan, c. xv, v. 790). Modern critics generally consider it Byron's masterpiece, with a total of over sixteen thousand individual lines of verse. Byron completed 16 cantos, leaving an unfinished 17th canto before his death in 1824. Byron claimed he had no ideas in his mind as to what would happen in subsequent cantos as he wrote his work. When the first two cantos were published anonymously in 1819, the poem was criticized for its 'immoral content', though it was also immensely popular.
