Stevenson was fascinated by eighteenth century Scottish history. Kidnapped, set in eighteenth century Scotland, is inspired by real events, notably the "Appin murder" which occurred in the aftermath of the Jacobite rising of 1745; many of the characters, such as Alan Breck Stewart, are based on real people. The hero, David Balfour, was a composite of members of Stevenson's family. However, Stevenson writes: "This is no furniture for the scholar's library, but a book for the winter evening ... to steal some young gentleman's attention from his Ovid, carry him awhile into the Highlands and the last century, and pack him to bed with some engaging images to mingle with his dreams."Kidnapped does just that, and, with its mix of suspense, crime, danger, escape, shipwrecks and pistols, it was an immediate success. However, Kidnapped is more than an adventure story, and has been praised by writers including Henry James, Jorge Luis Borges, and Hilary Mantel. This unabridged edition contains 60 illustrations by Louis Rhead, the well-known children's book illustrator. The text is set in modern crisp easy-to-read font and would be a pleasure for children or adults to read. The Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson, a celebrity during his lifetime, is best known for Treasure Island, Kidnapped, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, and A Child's Garden of Verse. He was a great traveller, journeying to Europe, America and the South Pacific, where spent his last years in Samoa. There he was much loved by the Samoans who called him Tusitala (Samoan for "Teller of Tales").

Although Stevenson is perhaps most famous for "Treasure Island", "Kidnapped", and "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", "The New Arabian Nights" was his first published collection of fiction. First published in 1916, It is an English-translation of the "One Thousand and One Nights", an anthology of South Asian and Middle Eastern folk tales compiled during the Islamic Golden Age. It was put together over hundreds of years by a variety of scholars, authors, and translators across Asia and North Africa, with the stories having roots in medieval Persian, Arabic, Mesopotamian, Jewish, Indian, and Egyptian folklore. Beautifully illustrated by Louis John Rhead, this classic collection is ideal for bedtime reading material and not to be missed by lovers of folklore. The brook trout has long held a special place in the hearts and minds of anglers. This volume, a collection from the pens of a number of well known writers of the time, begins with general information on the wily Salvelinus fontinalis, before moving on to discuss habitat and habits, angling methods and finally culinary considerations.Lavishly illustrated with turn of the century line drawings. The authors explore why will one angler will whip a stream successfully and his partner come home light? Of two men in a boat, why will one take ten to the other's none? This softbound edition reproduces "The Speckled Brook Trout" first published in 1902 in an effort to continue to bring classic, antiquarian sporting books to a wider audience than could possibly be reached by access only to those remaining copies of originally published work
