A cold, sterile hospital room had been Matthias home for the early parts of his life, but soon an alien ship arrives in the Sol system bringing a message out to all humans: War is coming, And humanity needs to do their part. Matthias signs up to leave his mortal body behind to become a machine, escaping his shackled body and becoming the only thing capable of slowing down the Futility. But are the aliens his only foes, when humanity had fought each other for generations?
