Marguerite Yourcenar (her pseudonym was an anagram of her family name, Crayencour) was born in Brussels in 1903 and died in Maine in 1987. She was awarded many literary honors, most notably election to the Académie Française in 1980, the first woman so honored.

Hennes mest berömda verk är Hadrianus minnen från 1951. Yourcenar valdes in som första kvinna i Franska akademien 1981 och 1965 nominerades hon till Nobelpriset i litteratur.

Hadrianus var kejsare i Rom 117-138 e kr och ledde ett mäktigt imperium. På ålderns höst drog han sig tillbaka till sitt Tivoli, för att slippa Roms intriger och rävspel, stank och elände. Bland pinjer och prunkande grönska lät han uppföra allt han behövde för att trivas och samtidigt utföra sina kejserliga skyldigheter.Hadrianus var en motsägelsernas man, snar till vrede men öm i kärlek, framstående fältherre men också konstälskare och skald. Hans möte med den vackre ynglingen Antinous blev en vändpunkt i hans liv och innebar den djupaste tragedi men också den största lycka. Som han själv uttrycker det i romanen: "Av alla våra lekar är kärleken den enda som har möjligheter att åstadkomma en omvälvning i vår själ."
