Vores tilværelse præges af de fortællinger, vi er omgivet af. Fortællinger har betydning for identitet, for fællesskaber og ikke mindst for muligheden af at skabe mening og sammenhæng i tilværelsen. Fortællinger gør det både muligt at forstå fortiden, forhandle mening og integrere forandringer. Livsfortællinger er en særlig genre, som spiller en rolle for menneskers identitet, og som finder anvendelse i forskellige former for pædagogisk og socialt arbejde. Baggrund for bogen Evnen til at lytte til andre og skabe et godt fortællemiljø er af afgørende betydning i mange professionelle sammenhænge. Vi har behov for andre perspektiver på tilværelsen en vores eget. Fortællinger gør det muligt at leve sig ind i og dele andre menneskers oplevelser og erfaringer. Bogens indhold Fortællingernes dimensioner og forudsætninger, kulturelle, kropslige og kognitive beskrives. Fortællinger anskues både som et fænomen, hvis form og indhold kan analyseres, og som en kommunikativ handling, når fortællinger skabes og udveksles imellem mennesker. Om forfatteren Marianne Horsdal er professor dr. phil. i Uddannelsesforskning på Institut for Kulturvidenskab på SDU. Hun har arbejdet med fortællinger og livsfortællinger i mere end 25 år og anses for en af de førende internationale specialister inden for narrativ forskning. Hun har skrevet en lang række bøger og artikler om emnet, bl.a. Danmark – mit fædreland (1991), Livets fortællinger (1999), Vilje og Vilkår (2000), At lære, at huske, at være (2008) og Telling Lives (2012), som er Marianne Horsdals disputats.

Both interest in and understanding of narrative analysis had developed rapidly in recent years and is now a mainstream element of research across many disciplines. In the groundbreaking Telling Lives: Exploring dimensions of narratives, the author illustrates as many facets as possible of the stories people tell about their lives. She demonstrates the interconnectedness between engagements in narrative research and shows that the theoretical understanding of the nature of narrative is bound up with the methods for biographical narrative research.Through a combination of three independent, connected narrative dimensions, an embodied, a cognitive and a socio-cultural narrative, the author focuses on life story narratives as symbolic expressions where cultural constructions allow for interpersonal interaction. Hvordan lærer børn at fortælle? Hvordan er forholdet mellem den enkeltes livshistorie og de kulturelle fortællinger? Hvordan kan man bruge livshistorier i pædagogiske, forskningsmæssige og terapeutiske sammenhænge? Hvad karakteriserer den livshistoriske fortælling som narrativ genre, og hvorfor er livshistorier så aktuelle netop i dag? LIVETS FORTÆLLINGER - en bog om livshistorier og identitet handler om, hvordan vi gennem fortællinger skaber mening og sammenhæng i tilværelsen. Forskningslektor, mag.art. Marianne Horsdal er ansat ved Center for Kulturstudier, Syddansk Universitet, Odense. Hun har arbejdet med livshistorier i ti år og udgivet samlingerne DANMARK MIT FÆDRELAND (Borgen 1991) og HALVFEMSERFORTÆLLINGER (Borgen 1998). Teoriudviklingen og analysemetoderne i LIVETS FORTÆLLINGER er en del af et større forskningsprojekt om identitet, folkeoplysning og demokrati. Marianne Horsdal er endvidere faglig leder af et nordisk forskningsprojekt om folkeoplysningens arenaer som basis for demokratiske læringsprocesser.
