Hundreds of women were killed during the 1640-50 witch hunts. These trials, driven by an angry and puritan theology, encouraged people to turn on each other out of fear and moral panic. Starting in south-east England and quickly growing into a mass violence killing hundreds, this is the story of ten cases that perfectly demonstrate the national scale of the crisis. With the British civil wars raging in the background, Marion Gibson shares the stories of Anne West, Ellen Driver, Henry Maggs, Ann Jefferies and others unfairly accused and executed. Based on three years of archival research across Britain, Witchland offers a fresh new history of the country’s biggest witch hunt and why it’s still relevant today. This is a gripping historical account of witchcraft, inequality and the violence that rises during times of political and economic uncertainty.

An emotive, haunting story of a community torn apart, the Essex witch accusations and trial of 1581-2 are, taken together, one of the pivotal instances of that malign and destructive wave of misogynistic persecution which periodically broke over early modern England. Yet, for all their importance in the overall study of witchcraft, the so-called witches of St Osyth have largely been overlooked by scholars. Marion Gibson now sets right that neglect. Using fresh archival sources – and investigating not just the village itself, but also its neighbouring Elizabethan hamlets and habitations – the author offers revelatory new insights into the sixteen women and one man accused of sorcery while asking wider, provocative questions about the way history is recollected and interpreted. Combining landscape detective work, a reconstruction of lost spaces and authoritative readings of crucial documents, Gibson skilfully unlocks the poignant personal histories of those denied the chance to speak for themselves.
Nõidus. kolmteist ajaloolist kohtuprotsessi
Kaasahaarav ja värvikas ülevaade Euroopa, Aafrika ja Ameerika nõiaprotsessidest, mille ajendiks olnud suhtumine kõigesse seletamatusse kujundab maailma palet veel tänapäevalgi."Nõidus" viib lugeja põnevale teekonnale läbi sajandite. Osa käsitletud kohtuprotsessidest teavad paljud, näiteks Salemi nõidade omi, osa on vähem tuntud, näiteks Norras Vardo saarel peetud protsess, kus üht saami naist süüdistati mõrvas, Prantsusmaal toimunud protsess, kus noorel neiul tuli vastamisi seista usujuhist pihiisaga, ning Lesothos käivitatud nõiajaht, mille tagajärjel Briti koloniaalvõimud hukkasid kaks kohalikku juhti.

National Bestseller A New Yorker Best Book of 2024 A "thought-provoking and timely" (The Times, London) global history of witch trials across Europe, Africa, and the Americas, told through thirteen distinct trials that illuminate a pattern of demonization and conspiratorial thinking that has profoundly shaped human history. This "inventive and compelling" (The Times Literary Supplement, London) work of social history travels through thirteen witch trials across history, some famous--like the Salem witch trials--and some lesser-known: on Vard island, Norway, in the 1620s, where an indigenous Sami woman was accused of murder; in France in 1731, during the country's last witch trial, where a young woman was pitted against her confessor and cult leader; in Lesotho in 1948, where British colonial authorities executed local leaders. Exploring how witchcraft was feared, then decriminalized, and then reimagined as gendered persecution, Witchcraft takes on the intersections between gender and power, indigenous spirituality and colonial rule, political conspiracy and individual resistance. Offering a striking, dramatic journey unspooling over centuries and across continents, Witchcraft is a "well-rounded insight into some of the strangest and cruelest moments in history" (Buzz Magazine), giving voice to those who have been silenced by history.

Rediscovering Renaissance Witchcraft
Rediscovering Renaissance Witchcraft is an exploration of witchcraft in the literature of Britain and America from the 16th and 17th centuries through to the present day. As well as the themes of history and literature (politics and war, genre and intertextuality), the book considers issues of national identity, gender and sexuality, race and empire, and more. The complex fascination with witchcraft through the ages is investigated, and the importance of witches in the real world and in fiction is analysed. The book begins with a chapter dedicated to the stories and records of witchcraft in the Renaissance and up until the English Civil War, such as the North Berwick witches and the work of the ‘Witch Finder Generall’ Matthew Hopkins. The significance of these accounts in shaping future literature is then presented through the examination of extracts from key texts, such as Shakespeare’s Macbeth and Middleton’s The Witch, among others. In the second half of the book, the focus shifts to a consideration of the Romantic rediscovery of Renaissance witchcraft in the eighteenth century, and its further reinvention and continued presence throughout the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries, including the establishment of witchcraft studies as a subject in its own right, the impact of the First World War and end of the British Empire on witchcraft fiction, the legacy of the North Berwick, Hopkins and Salem witch trials, and the position of witchcraft in culture, including filmic and televisual culture, today. Equipped with an extensive list of primary and secondary sources, Rediscovering Renaissance Witchcraft is essential reading for all students of witchcraft in modern British and American culture and early modern history and literature.

Imagining the Pagan Past

Imagining the Pagan Past

Imagining the Pagan Past explores stories of Britain’s pagan history. These tales have been characterised by gods and fairies, folklore and magic. They have had an uncomfortable relationship with the scholarly world; often being seen as historically dubious, self-indulgent romance and, worse, encouraging tribal and nationalistic feelings or challenging church and state. This book shows how important these stories are to the history of British culture, taking the reader on a lively tour from prehistory to the present. From the Middle Ages to the twenty-first century, Marion Gibson explores the ways in which British pagan gods and goddesses have been represented in poetry, novels, plays, chronicles, scientific and scholarly writing. From Geoffrey of Monmouth to Edmund Spenser, William Shakespeare to Seamus Heaney and H.G. Wells to Naomi Mitchison it explores Romano-British, Celtic and Anglo-Saxon deities and fictions. The result is a comprehensive picture of the ways in which writers have peopled the British pagan pantheons throughout history. Imagining the Pagan Past will be essential reading for all those interested in the history of paganism.
