High Accuracy Partially Monotone Ordinal Classification

High Accuracy Partially Monotone Ordinal Classification

The problem with many machine learning classification algorithms is that their high level of accuracy is achieved at the cost of model comprehensibility, and with a consequent loss of justifiability: their mechanism cannot be shown to be reasonable because it cannot be explained. This has hindered their acceptance in sensitive domains, leading to growing demand for 'explainable AI'. In addition, the EU's recent GDPR legislation has elevated the issue to a legal requirement. If domain knowledge regarding nondecreasing (monotone) relationships could be incorporated into high performance classification algorithms without compromising their performance, the resulting increase in comprehensibility may allow them to surpass 'black box' barriers to acceptance and unlock their high accuracy for wider use. This book aims for 'complete' monotone classification algorithms, that: (a) are partially monotone (allow nonmonotone features); (b) guarantee monotonicity globally; (c) retain high accuracy; and (d) are scalable to large data sets. To achieve these aims, the book contains: - Explanation of the principles of ordinal classification, monotonicity and partial orders.- Extensive review of the literature and available monotone algorithms.- Several techniques for monotone tree-based ensembles (and Random Forest in particular).- Novel constraint generation for monotone Support Vector Machines.- Extension of cone-based dominance relations to partial monotonicity, for classification and pairwise and partial-order based problems.A panel of seventeen partially monotone datasets is used throughout the book to allow comparative empirical accuracy and performance of the many approaches discussed. It is hoped this book encourages and enables practitioners to include knowledge of monotonicity in their models when appropriate, for the sake of accuracy, simplicity, and interpretability.

The 1960s: a time of protests and civil rights marches, sit-ins and speak-outs, free-love rallies and anti-establishment Yip-ins. Yet going largely unnoticed was another powerful revolution: the explosive growth of the two-year college. In "The Profession of English in the Two-Year College," those on the front lines of this movement record how they successfully taught a new kind of student in a re-imagined postsecondary institution. Those students lived at home, worked to make ends meet, and were the first in their families to attend college. They were Vietnam veterans, adults years distant from high school, fulltime workers, and struggling immigrants. To teach them, faculty invented new curricula, novel instructional methods, and innovative teaching materials - and in doing so also invented a blueprint for successful two-year college English teaching. "The Profession of English in the Two-Year College" features essays by major figures including Mark Reynolds, Elizabeth Nist, Marilyn Smith Layton, and William Costanzo, concluding with a selective bibliography by Howard Tinberg. Featuring essays about curricular innovation, ESL, the value of professional conferences, and the crucial role that two-year colleges have played in technological innovation, this volume shines a bright light on an institution that has become a mainstay of American higher education.

This long awaited book gives a thorough account of the mathematical foundations of Temporal Logic, one of the most important areas of logic in computer science. The book, which consists of fifteen chapters, moves on from giving a solid introduction in semantical and axiomatic approaches to temporal logic to covering the central topics of predicate temporal logic, meta-languages, general theories of axiomatization, many dimensional systems, propositional quantifiers, expressive power, Henkin dimension, temporalization of other logics, and decidability results. Much of the research presented here is frontline in the new results and in the unifying methodology. This is an indispensable reference work for both the pure logician and the theoretical computer scientist.
