REVIEWS FOR MARK ROBERTS: 'A fast-paced, chilling novel... Short chapters, crackling dialogue and action that never lets up for a single moment... Mark Roberts is what British crime fiction has been looking for' CRIMESQUAD. 'Intricate, fast-paced, with a sense of the macabre... A genuinely innovative crime writer' DAILY MAIL. 'Dark, gripping and believable. Roberts' intimate knowledge of Liverpool makes the city into a sinister character of itself' GRAHAM MASTERTON. 'This is one of the most thought-provoking, powerful serial killing murders I've ever read. It's brutal, but I found that the plot was so deep, so twisted, intense and clever that there was no way I could put the book down until the final page' BESTSELLING CRIME THRILLERS.
There is a significant problem in our schools: too many boys are struggling. The list of things to concern teachers is long. Disappointing academic results, a lack of interest in studying, higher exclusion rates, increasing mental health issues, sexist attitudes, an inability to express emotions... Traditional ideas about masculinity are having a negative impact, not only on males, but females too. In this ground-breaking book, Matt Pinkett and Mark Roberts argue that schools must rethink their efforts to get boys back on track.Boys Don't Try? examines the research around key topics such as anxiety and achievement, behaviour and bullying, schoolwork and self-esteem. It encourages the reader to reflect on how they define masculinity and consider what we want for boys in our schools. Offering practical quick wins, as well as long-term strategies to help boys become happier and achieve greater academic success, the book: offers ways to avoid problematic behaviour by boys and tips to help teachers address poor behaviour when it happens; highlights key areas of pastoral care that need to be recognised by schools; exposes how popular approaches to "engaging" boys are actually misguided and damaging; details how issues like disadvantage, relationships, violence, peer pressure, and pornography affect boys' perceptions of masculinity and how teachers can challenge these. With an easy-to-navigate three-part structure for each chapter, setting out the stories, key research, and practical solutions, this is essential reading for all classroom teachers and school leaders who are keen to ensure male students enjoy the same success as girls.

Congratulations on becoming a Christian. You have turned away from the emptiness and vanity of this world and have determined to find the abundant life that only Jesus offers. Without question, this decision is the most important one you have ever made. Your faith in Christ moved you to repent of sin, to confess Him as the Son of God, and to be immersed in water for the forgiveness of sins. These things will make, for you, an eternity of difference. But what happens now? Christianity is not a single decision, a one-time event that can be completed and forgotten. No, Christianity is a way of life that is lived on a daily basis. Jesus says: "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me" (Luke 9:23). You have already expressed your desire to "come after" Jesus. How do you live out that desire each day? What does it mean to "take up a cross?" How do we follow Jesus? These questions are at the core of the discipleship concept. Jesus did not die so people would go to church on Sunday, practicing Christianity as a kind of weekend hobby. Jesus wants disciples: people who are committed to learning about Him and following Him at all times. The seven lessons in this book are designed specifically to help you effectively begin this process. Each lesson is based on material from the Gospel of Luke, a book that gives a full explanation of following Jesus Christ. Through interaction with the Word of God, this lesson guide, other Christians, and with much prayer you can lay the groundwork for a lifetime of solid, fulfilling discipleship. Open your heart, open your Bible, and get ready to answer the question of questions: "Who will follow Jesus?"

One morning. Two crimes. Three victims and counting... A young Czech girl, missing for eight days, is found abandoned in a deserted playground. She is so traumatised she cannot speak. DCI Eve Clay is on her way to interview the victim, when another case is called in. Two Polish migrant workers have been found dead in their burnt out flat. But Clay soon realises that this is no normal house fire. The men's bodies were set alight, after the killer had clinically removed both of their hearts. Then reports come in that the Czech girl's mother has now also disappeared. As Clay and her team work to make sense of these crimes, they receive a call saying there will be another murder before the day ends. And this time, the body count will only go up...

But for DCI Eve Clay and her team at the Merseyside Police, it's a nightmare. Their job is to solve crimes and lock up the killer – hard enough without being despised by the public they are trying to protect. And now, just when they think they've cracked the case, they receive a photo of Vindici at a Day of The Dead parade in Mexico. If Vindici is 5,000 miles away, who are they hunting in Liverpool? The book explores the claim that English local government exists in one of the most centralised relationships with national government. Such a position fundamentally undermines any notion of local self-government and makes the term ‘government’ in local government a misnomer. The book will examine how the erosion of the autonomy, powers, roles, functions and responsibilities of English local government came about, the arguments of centralisers and localisers to support their view of the constitutional status of local government, and its overall role in the government of England. The book offers an antidote to the onward march of centralisation by offering a new vision of local government which emphasises both ‘local’ and ‘government’.
Why can't she say what she saw? She watched her father die... Leonard Lawson was a respected professor of medieval art. He lived a quiet life in a suburb of Liverpool with his grown-up daughter. He had no enemies. Louise Lawson witnessed her father's murder. Before she blacked out, she saw his body mutilated and deformed, twisted into a parody of the artworks he loved. DCI Eve Clay must overcome her own demons to decode a message written in blood – before another life is taken.
The genesis of my book is 20 years coming. Imagine a young 22-year-old starting a career as a financial advisor with a young face and working for a captive company, where my clientele options were very limited. I discovered quickly that for me to make a real go of this career, I needed to stand out from other financial advisors. I dove into tax strategies. I wanted to build a company in the financial service industry that had an emphasis on helping clients strategically save taxes on their investment accounts. Now, years later, I can say the No. 1 question I get regarding tax strategies is, "if this is that easy, then why my financial advisor wouldn't show this to me?" In my book, you will learn what we know to be basic strategies that, hopefully, will enhance your lifestyle and your portfolio's longevity. Also in the book, we address some of investors' fears about their money, like outliving their money, stock market risk and health care expenses. In my experience, the No. 1 fear most investors have is they don't know what they don't know. In other words, they don't know what questions to ask their advisor or even how to find the right advisor. I believe investors, in general, expect a financial advisor to inform them about things that are important and to be proactive and not just reactive. In this context, reactive means answering investor questions as they arise and being there for them when they need it, which are both important. But I also believe that being proactive with my investors is essential. I provide education and I actively deliver information that gives them something different to think about, something outside the box...I want you to read this book and say to yourself, "wow that made sense," and "I wish I had read this book long ago." I hope this book gives you ideas to take back to your advisor and ask some heart-to-heart questions, review these rules and tax laws, and figure out what you can do now to get on the right track.
