Part war story, part memoir, telling the story of Mark's father's RAF flying boat crew on special duties operations in the Indian Ocean. Through the lens of his relationship with his father and the stories he would share with young Mark when they looked through his logbook together, Mark will bring to life the lives of the men he served with - including the death of his father's best friend in an attack with a Japanese fighter. It will set their story against the wider war fought by the RAF, SOE and the wider war fought by British and Commonwealth forces in the Burma theatre, while weaving in Mark's own friendships with the survivors after the war and his efforts to record and pay tribute to their service and sacrifice as part of his growing interest in medals.

Finn and Kas are surviving on the coast--more than surviving: they're enjoying the surf, the summer and being together. And now, the lights of Wentworth mean life could soon be back to normal. Finn is cautiously optimistic, but Kas knows she can never escape her status as a refugee, and that a return to slavery is a very real possibility. She's nervous. And it turns out she's right to be. When Kas is captured and taken inside the fences, Finn faces his greatest challenge yet. Taut and compelling--an exceptional conclusion to the Wilder Trilogy for teens, about resilience and self-reliance.

In The Final Days of Jesus, Mark Smith brings his experience as a classical historian to bear on the life of the historical Jesus, piecing together the volatile political context of first-century Judaea, as well as the lives of Pontius Pilate, Annas, and Joseph Caiaphas. The claim that 'the Jews crucified Jesus' has spawned a long and tragic history of Christian anti-Semitism. Smith challenges this claim through detailed exploration of Roman, Jewish, and Christian written sources and a broad range of archaeological evidence, such as the ossuary of Caiaphas, the 'Hidden Gate', and the rich vein of research devoted to the archaeology of ritual purity. The result is an earthy and nuanced portrait of Jewish life under Roman rule. From his discussion of the multiplicity and brutality of Roman executions to the intricate personal relationships among elites that provided the means of collaboration and redress, Smith details the complex push-pull of forces between Rome and the Temple as they collided in one history-changing week.

Osiris, god of the dead, was one of ancient Egypt's most important deities. The earliest secure evidence for belief in him dates back to the fifth dynasty (c.2494-2345BC), but he continued to be worshipped until the fifth century AD. Following Osiris is concerned with ancient Egyptian conceptions of the relationship between Osiris and the deceased, or what might be called the Osirian afterlife, asking what the nature of this relationship was and what the prerequisites were for enjoying its benefits. It does not seek to provide a continuous or comprehensive account of Egyptian ideas on this subject, but rather focuses on five distinct periods in their development, spread over four millennia. The periods in question are ones in which significant changes in Egyptian ideas about Osiris and the dead are known to have occurred or where it has been argued that they did, as Egyptian aspirations for the Osirian afterlife took time to coalesce and reach their fullest form of expression. An important aim of the book is to investigate when and why such changes happened, treating religious belief as a dynamic rather than a static phenomenon and tracing the key stages in the development of these aspirations, from their origin to their demise, while illustrating how they are reflected in the textual and archaeological records. In doing so, it opens up broader issues for exploration and draws meaningful cross-cultural comparisons to ask, for instance, how different societies regard death and the dead, why people convert from one religion to another, and why they abandon belief in a god or gods altogether.

What Every Inventor Ought to Know About Designing, Engineering, and Mass Manufacturing their Idea: What a professional engineer has learned from 10+ y
This book is a transcription of an interview I did with an expert on prototyping and mass manufacturing. And he reveals what he has learned in his past ten years of taking ideas from paper...to prototype...to mass manufacturing...to selling millions of units per month. It doesn't matter if you've never built a thing in your life...the secrets shared here will work for all different kinds of inventions. The purpose of this interview is to help show you how to create your idea - either one prototype or one million manufactured end products - as quick and as cheap as humanly possible. You'll discover: The pros and cons of manufacturing in the U.S. versus China. The difference between designing a prototype and designing an end product 5 ways to use a prototype (and why it's better if the first one is NOT perfect) How much you can expect to spend on mass manufacturing and the #1 rule to reducing costs How long most big manufacturers spend on prototyping What Mark Smith learned about manufacturing in Asia after multiple trips there (when you should consider manufacturing in China) The step-by-step process from going to idea to end product (and why the first step IS NOT making the thing or protecting it with a patent) How to determine if someone is qualified to build your idea (and what you must ask for FIRST before you hire them to build it) How to keep your idea secret while hiring someone to build it for you An easy rule of thumb for marking up your product to ensure you make a profit

Residential child care is a crucial, though relatively neglected area of social work. And yet, revelations of abuse and questions of effectiveness have led to increasingly regulatory and procedural approaches to practice and heightened political and professional scrutiny. This book provides a broad and critical look at the ideas and policy developments that have shaped the direction of the sector. The book sets present-day policy and practice within historical, policy and organisational context. The author applies a critical gaze to attempts to improve practice through regulation and, fundamentally, challenges how residential child care is conceptualised. He argues that it needs to move beyond dominant discourses of protection, rights and outcomes to embrace those of care and upbringing. The importance of the personal relationship in helping children to grow and develop is highlighted. Other traditions of practice such as the European concept of social pedagogy are also explored to more accurately reflect the task of residential child care. The book will be of interest to practitioners in residential child care, social workers and students on social work and social care courses. It should be required reading for social work managers and will also be of interest to policy makers and students of social policy, education and childhood studies.

The impacts of climate change are being felt all around the world and as they become more damaging and widespread, it is the 2.7 billion people in the world who live on less than $2 a day who will be hit first and hardest. The carbon emissions fuelling the lifestyles of people in the North are causing changes in the patterns of the seasons. Rainfall, flooding, and drought are threatening to make the gap between rich and poor in the world wider, and the UN Millennium Development Goals unattainable. Lament is not good enough - we must take action. Based on analysis of the evidence for climate change and the vulnerability of poor people, this book develops a framework for action and makes clear the link between consumer and political choices in the North, and impacts in the South on the most vulnerable people on the planet. Just One Planet is essential reading for anyone who wants to get behind the scare stories to reach a well-informed and detailed understanding of climate change, and to find out what action needs to be taken, now. This book also provides an indispensable reference for NGOs, government policy advisors, researchers, students, and specialists in the areas of Development, Climate, and Environmental Studies.

The introduction of public Internet access has raised a host of policy questions for librarians, such as: where should terminals be located?; how can users be trained?; and how can copyright violations, sexual harassment and other inappropriate uses be prevented? Beginning with an overview of the policy development and implementation process, this handbook identifies policy options - and the pros and cons of each option - for a wide range of issues. Individual sections then deal with physical considerations, access issues, acceptable use policies, filters and training. Additional material on measuring use, handling challenges to library policies and procedures, and a compendium of representative library policies should make this book a useful reference for any library offering Internet access.

Seeing beyond the military memorabilia shared by members of the public to the often deeply moving human stories at their heart, Mark brings the past vividly to life for millions at home and has become something of a national treasure. Historian, battlefield tour guide, expert on the Victoria Cross and story-teller, Mark grew up within a close-knit, multi-generational family in Walthamstow, during a childhood steeped in history. His rare empathy for the experience and sacrifice of past generations was fostered by Mark's WWII veteran father, who shared stories of flying special operations for the RAF. But Smith Snr was also haunted by the loss of his best friend, Harry, on a secret mission over the Indian Ocean. From the pages of his father’s unpublished wartime memoir, to a pilgrimage to a Chennai cemetery, here Mark takes us on his most personal journey, to try to bring closure to his father’s story. Nostalgic and heartfelt, Medal Man is the true story of a bygone East London, of a father and son who were also best friends, and of the memories that still bind us to this Greatest Generation.
